Neal Set To Announce Decision

The visits are complete. The pros and cons have been looked over. And the final decision has been made.

Davonte Neal at Central

ATH Davonte Neal is ready to announce his choice from Arizona, Arkansas, North Carolina and Notre Dame.

Scottsdale (Ariz.) Chaparral athlete Davonte Neal is prepared to share his college choice publicly after selecting a school last week.

Here's a rundown of the four finalists by Luke Neal, the four-star prospect's father, that will be represented at Tuesday's scheduled press conference at his elementary school, Kyrene de la Esperanza, with the ceremony beginning at 9 a.m. MST and the announcement scheduled for 9:30 a.m. MST (11:30 a.m. EST):

Arkansas: "The SEC is a great conference to play in and he'd be challenged at every practice and in every game. It'd be a great opportunity to play at a high level. There is a great alumni base and he'd be able to start his major right away as a freshman."

Arizona: "It's close t home, so that's a big plus if he needed to reach out to his support group. The coaches are a draw for them and it's a great opportunity to go in and play right away."

North Carolina: "Great education and an opportunity to be a part of a good situation and play right away. His grandmother lives out there and he's intrigued by the new coach."

Notre Dame: "You can't go wrong with a school like Notre Dame academically. They graduate 98-percent of the players and it's an opportunity to play on national television every week. The alumni base is strong and there's coaching stability there. He'd have the opportunity to play right away and he loved the visit."

The 5-9, 170-pound player took official visits to Notre Dame on Dec. 9, Arkansas on Jan. 20, and North Carolina on Jan. 27. He was going to take his last official to Arizona after removing Ohio State and Oklahoma from his list, but he had the Ed Doherty Award ceremony to attend the day he would've started the 48-hour visit.

The tragic passing of Davonte's 15-year old cousin temporarily slowed down the process as him and his family put their thoughts and prayers into that situation as they rode the roller coaster of emotions of whether she'd survive being struck by a car or not, but in those difficult moments he pulled whatever positives he could from it to help gain additional perspective in his decision.

"My grandfather used to say, "You take a mess and somewhere in that mess is a message"," Luke said. "Davonte was able to find it through all the sadness and it helped steer him further towards picking the right school."

Neal, who rushed for 1,100 yards and racked up 1,300 yards receiving, is rated by 247Sports as the No. 6 athlete in the land, the top player in Arizona and the nation's No. 53 overall recruit.

BlueandGold.com caught up with the Neal camp the night before the announcement to gather some final thoughts heading into the big day.

"It's a great thing and a great situation to be in," Luke shared as his son prepared his speech for the press conference on Monday night. "It's more like a combination of Christmas Even because we have to wake up and choose the best university for Davonte, but also Christmas because we get to know and show his great present."

As the fan bases from the four college programs await word of Neal's decision, the college coaches will learn where they stand not too much sooner.

"He's going to start making the calls at 8:30 a.m. (MST)," Luke continued. "He decided to let all the schools know the morning of the announcement and he'll inform them one by one until he reaches the school that he'll be attending."

With the announcement beginning at 9 a.m., the school's band will perform and there will be speakers prior to Davonte stepping to the podium to talk about each school and ultimately make his choice be known.

Neal played in the 2012 Under Armour All-America Game.

No hat game will be played as he'll just sign the National Letter of Intent out of respect for the programs that recruited him, and the significance of doing it at his elementary school is to show his appreciation for the role that the school played in his academic development.

"His third grade teacher, Mrs. Martha Tackus, has formed Davonte into the young man that he is academically," Luke said. "Her being hard on him, but still loving him, was what he needed and she has always been a very caring woman to him and wanted to see him do well. It's one of the great reasons why he chose to do it there.

"He's going to give his framed Under Armour All-America Game jersey as a show of his appreciation. He loves the fact that he's coming from there and those teachers never once doubted him. It will be more of a moving experience.

"It's closing a chapter of his life, but a new chapter is starting for his playing and academic career."

With less than 12 hours until Davonte's decision became official, Luke had a few final comments about the next step his son was about to take.

"Watching him go through the process from a freshman to a senior and getting ready to embark on his new beginning has been so rewarding," he shared. "It's the end of the beginning.

"It was a joy an a true blessing as a parent for Davonte to have as many great choices as he did. And it means even more when you know that whichever one he made was the right one. I can't say enough about how proud I am of him and we're ready to continue taking this journey."
