Atlanta Nike SPARQ Combine Notebook

ATLANTA, Ga. -- Admittedly, things can change.

Nick Chubb

Nick Chubb will visit Florida next.

He hasn't, after all, visited a few other programs that could become factors.

But for right now, three programs stand out, four-star running back Nick Chubb of Cedartown (Ga.) said at Saturday's Nike SPARQ Combine.

"It's Georgia, Tennessee and Auburn," Chubb told 247Sports. "Those visits stand out and those schools stand out. That's my top three, no order. That's the top for right now. But I haven't been to Ohio State or Florida yet."

Why do the Bulldogs, Volunteers and Tigers have an edge over the field at this point?

"I've got good relationships with them, and I've probably been there more than anywhere else," Chubb said.

He added that "Tennessee and Georgia are recruiting me the hardest."

According to the 5-feet-11, 216-pound Chubb, the No. 12 running back in the 247Composite, he will visit the Gators in two or three weeks and the Buckeyes in April. Georgia Tech is another school that could get a visit from Chubb.

"I'm trying to get down to Florida next," he said. "I've been calling them the last couple of weeks. They seem very interested."

2015 receiver Christian Owens is a big target at 6 feet, 5 inches.

Chubb's most recent offers have come from Nebraska, Vanderbilt and Wisconsin.

THE NEXT JJ?

Sophomore receiver Christian Owens of Griffin (Ga.) already is 6-feet-5, 205 pounds, and he said Alabama assistant Kirby Smart already has compared him to another big-bodied pass-catcher.

"He tells me I'm going to be the next Julio Jones … or even better," Owens said.

Jones, now in the NFL, is a former Crimson Tide star. It appears his former team has taken a liking to Owens.

"I've talked to Coach Smart two or three times," Owens said. "He's also been to my school. He told me he wanted to offer me early. I've been to Alabama twice and I've been to Georgia. I'll be going back to Alabama for camp this summer. I think Coach Smart is a pretty good coach -- even though he doesn't coach receivers. He's cool."

Owens doesn't yet hold any offers. Should one eventually come from Alabama, he made it seem as though it would be difficult to pass up.

"I would strongly consider [committing there]," Owens said.

Christian Harris

Georgia is a school that OL Christian Harris is hearing a lot from.

STOCK RISING FOR GEORGIA OL

Things on the recruiting front have started to pick up of late for offensive tackle Christian Harris of Suwanee (Ga.) Collins Hill, one of the better-looking players physically at Saturday's event.

"My top BCS offer would be North Carolina," Harris said. "In the past week or two, I've also gotten Charlotte, South Alabama, Georgia State and Ohio."

According to Harris, he has talked a good bit with schools such as Alabama and Georgia, and the 6-feet-5, 275-pounder said the feedback from those programs has been positive.

"I went to junior day at Georgia and talked to [Georgia coach Mark Richt] a little bit," Harris said. "He says he's really interested in me and said he's really close to offering -- about as close as you can be. I think he wants to see me on the field first. I've also talked to Coach Smart at Alabama."

Harris is extremely lean for a high school lineman, and that is something college coaches have pointed out to him as being a good thing.

"They definitely look at it in a positive manner and say they don't have to break down all this fat," Harris said. "They say they can work with me and get me in the weight room as soon as I get there instead of having to get all the fat off."

Harris mentioned Duke and North Carolina as schools he'd like to visit sometime in the near future. He plans on seeing the Blue Devils during spring break.

Trey Derouen

Offensive guard Trey Derouen is a player to watch for 2015.

Because he expects more offers to come, Harris said he doesn't really have any favorites yet.

UP-AND COMER AT PARKVIEW

2015 offensive guard Trey Derouen of Lilburn (Ga.) Parkview doesn't yet have any offers, but he's definitely a player to keep an eye on in the coming years. Derouen visited Alabama last weekend, and already is getting face time with Saban and Smart.

"They're telling me they like what they see and they want to visit me this spring," Derouen said.

For Derouen, meeting Saban in his office was an eye-opening -- and somewhat intimidating -- experience.

"I was a little nervous," Derouen said. "It was just amazing. He said we're highly recruit ing you."

The 6-feet-3, 309-pounder also has visited Georgia.

"It was pretty nice," he said. "They're like an academic school first."

Alabama probably won't be the only college at Derouen school during spring practice. He expects the Dawgs, Georgia Tech and Vanderbilt to drop by, too.

QUICK HITTERS

*Langston Hughes (Ga.) middle linebacker Kalil Gray, who recently picked up offer No. 1 from Georgia State, said Saturday he is hearing a lot from both Kentucky and Missouri.

*2014 receiver/cornerback Bingo Morton Jr., also of Langston Hughes, said Old Dominion became the first school to offer him last week.

*Junior offensive guard Justin Brown of Hampton (Ga.) Lovejoy, a starter on a state runner-up squad in 2012, said he's receiving strong interest from programs such as Auburn, Mississippi State and Ole Miss. He attended junior day at Auburn recently.

QUOTEWORTHY

"The hardest part was just staying warm and getting flexible. The 40-yard dash was hard. My knees were stiff. But overall, it wasn't bad. You've got to deal with stuff like this. You may have to play a game in the snow someday." -- Chubb, commenting on Saturday's weather, which included temperatures in the 30s with snow flurries.

    • It's really unfortunate the weather conditions were so bad today in Atlanta for this combine. 40 degrees, stiff wind (which made chill like 33) and at times mist/flurries. Really wish this could be done in dome as every year Atlanta combine weather less than ideal in early march.

Still aware of one notable performance...2015 RB Taj Griffin of McEachern: 4.43 40, 4.1 shuttle, 40" vertical, 29 PB...105 SPARQ

He will be going to Orlando combine in 2 weeks for hopefully more favorable weather ...expect high 4.3 40 down there.

Taj has that speed/burst that I recall seeing from Orlando Parker at Jeff Davis (Montgomery, AL) back in 1989. Parker went to Auburn where he played football and won the SEC Championship in the 55m dash before transferring to Troy and eventually being drafted by the Jets. Parker was like "whoa" speed at Jeff Davis.

I've stated before that I love athletes like Taj and Bryce Love in that they still have a lot more maturing/growing and are currently playmakers cause of athleticism/speed. Many guys that are physically matured at this age and dominate in high school often times don't translate well to college or the NFL as they are no longer the biggest/strongest guy on the field.

With good health, Taj will likely be a 5 star....as will Bryce Love due to their speed. Interested to see how their SPARQ scores compare this year. Warmer weather in Orlando should definitely yield an even faster time in the 40 assuming no headwind.

I actually ran into 4 kids at the Kennesaw Barrett Parkway LA Fitness this evening that still had on their SPARQ Combine Jerseys. One of the kids said he's the 1/2 brother of Texas A&M DE/OLB Damontre Moore. They all play at Sprayberry. They asked me for tips on getting faster/becoming more explosive. Told them they need to look up Tyren's dad as he's a great trainer.

    • I've heard some good things on Taj from some folks that recruit McEachern. Very impressive that he hung a 4.43 in those conditions.

I will be in Orlando, and he's one of the guys I can't wait to see burn it up.

Add in 2015 Shaun Crawford as well from Ohio. Been watching him compete since 10 yo in track. Kid is also super explosive. He was Taj's nemesis in 100, 200 and Long Jump. Crawford long jumped 20 feet as a 13 year old. Wiltfong just reported a 4.34 hand timed at a combin this weekend. Taj, Bryce and Shaun are unbelievable talents in 2015.

LOL.....That's the advantage of coaching/having kids in Youth Track.....you get to see many of the future elite skill guys before the mainstream knows about them due to their football exploits.

Kids like heat3x mentioned were so explosive as 10-12 year olds....you know as long as the interest and toughness were there they could be special skill players on the gridiron.

Thanks for the info as I wasn't aware of Crawford. Just looked at his track stats and 4.34 hand-timed is probably about right.

Is Taj running track for McEachern and the Heat this year?

Not running for either this season. Training, few combine events and several college camps this spring/summer.

Lol...nah, as BBD stated, just benefit of coaching AAU/USATF summer track. See a lot of great athletes at very young age and most of the boys are also football players so it is kind of neat now seeing them hit this point where they are big time college football recruits. Kids like Taj, Bryce and Shaun were running high school type times at very young ages. If you have never been to a AAU or USATF summer track meet it is something to behold in terms of talent and raw athleticism.

    • Not sure if there is a change in policy but they listed complete results for all the Combines last year. Attached 2012 ATL Results had about 1,450 athletes.

Probably takes a few days to enter all the data....but haven't yet seen results from any previous 2013 SPARQ Combines..... So I'm not sure.
