AUBURN - It was, Auburn coach Gene Chizik said Wednesday, a different kind of signing day. He went to bed Tuesday night uncertain which direction as many as eight prospects would go.

Auburn coach Gene Chizik says he has no second thoughts about Auburn's recruiting approach.
"You play a little Russian roulette in there to some degree," Chizik said. "You just have to use your best judgment."
In the end, three signed with Auburn. Five signed with others. Meanwhile, some highly rated players Auburn could have signed went elsewhere.
"It's all about relationships and how deep in it are you," Chizik said. "How good is your shot? There are some risk-reward things you have to deal with, particularly when you can only sign 25. It becomes a little challenging. No question about it."
Offensive lineman Will Adams abandoned a commitment to Georgia Tech and signed with Auburn. Offensive lineman Avery Young chose Auburn over Florida and Georgia. Wide receiver Ricardo Louis chose Auburn over Florida State.
Defensive tackle Eddie Goldman and cornerback Ronald Darby went to Florida State. Defensive end Leonard Williams went to USC. Linebacker Kwon Alexander went to LSU. Wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson went to Tennessee.
In the end, Auburn signed 20 players, including five already in school. Four-star offensive lineman Jordan Diamond, 3-star offensive lineman Alex Kozan and 5-star wide receiver Stefon Diggs are still contemplating their decisions and have Auburn as a finalist.
"We target who we think is the best fit for Auburn," Chizik said. "It doesn't matter really where they are. It just matters that they are the right fit for what we are trying to do. We want great Auburn men that are great football players. We are going to go after the best of the best. That's what we do. In recruiting the best of the best, some you are going to get and some you are not going to get.
"... We are going to start in this state and recruit great players. We are going to move outside of the state. If we miss on a guy, we're going to the next guy. There are no concerns on my part about the way we do it."
Chizik said, in the end, he was pleased with the class even as express optimism it wasn't finished.
"As we targeted and started out the recruiting process, we wanted to bring in the best guys for Auburn," Chizik said. "We feel great about the quality of the class. We feel like we targeted needs we addressed on our football team, and we addressed those needs. We feel very fortunate we were able to land some of these top recruits."
The only Signing Day surprise was 6-foot-2, 205-pound quarterback Jonathan Wallace of Central High School in Phenix City. He was the second quarterback in the class, joining early enrollee Zeke Pike.
"With Barrett (Trotter) leaving, if we don't sign a second quarterback, we sitting with three scholarship quarterbacks," Chizik said. That was something we felt like we needed to address. Jonathan Wallace is a local guy that has had a lot of great success He's a very athletic guy who has really blossomed at that position."
