Currently a three-star prospect by 247Sports and in the 247Composite, Gavin Schilling is emerging from under the radar. One of the top head coaches in college ball checked him out this week.
Originally from Germany, Schilling is turning heads in America.
Schilling, a 6-9, 240-pound power forward playing for Henderson (Nev.) Findlay Prep, didn't play on the travel circuit this summer, but his play this fall has the attention of coaches across the country.
On Wednesday, Coach Krzyzewski and two assistants were in the gym along with assistants from Clemson, Michigan State and UCLA to watch Schilling.
Findlay head coach Todd Simon also mentioned Connecticut, Missouri, Texas, Arizona, California, Villanova and Oklahoma State as schools who have recently expressed interest.
Averaging 14 points and eight rebounds per game, Schilling received high praise from Coach Simon.
"Gavin is a pup," Simon told 247Sports. "He just turned 17 a couple weeks ago. When I first saw him I liked him because he played so hard and had great hands. Once we got him, we found out he is one of those rare kids who absorbs everything.
"He remind me, not the same certainly as far as natural ability, of Anthony Bennett. We have seen rapid improvement with Gavin like we did with Anthony. He has gotten better at everything so quickly."
Having visited Minnesota at the beginning of the school year, Schilling will wait until after the season to visit other schools. His recruitment is still very much in flux.
"He is one of the most recruited players we have every had quantity wise," said Simon. "He is open to entertaining any school looking for a big man."
Simon finished his assessment of Schilling with this take:
"He has a lot of things going for him. He loves the weight room, has huge hands and plays the game recklessly hard. He is only going to keep getting better."
247Sports will catch Schilling in action at the Hoophall Classic in January and reassess his ranking.
Presently Schilling has a No. 176 ranking by 247Sports and a No. 183 ranking in the 247Composite.
