Jones is ranked as the nation's No. 7 running back and No. 89 prospect overall in the class-of-2014.
The Minnesota class-of-2014 recruiting cycle began on a big note on Saturday in the form of the state's top prospect in Jeff Jones giving his pledge to the Gophers.
The 6-foot, 195-pound Minneapolis (Minn.) Washburn standout confirmed on Saturday afternoon that he committed to Minnesota.
Ranked as the nation's No. 7 running back and No. 89 prospect overall, Jones chose the in-state Gophers over offers from Illinois, Iowa, Iowa State, Michigan State, Syracuse and Wisconsin. Other programs showing interest included Nebraska, Notre Dame and Ohio State.
Jones emerged as a national recruit as a sophomore where he rushed for 1,450 yards and 18 touchdowns while adding another 10 scores receiving. This past fall, he missed some time but still managed to rush for 1,002 yards on just 111 carries with nine touchdowns. He also had three scores receiving.
Jones is the first commit for Minnesota in the class-of-2014.
