SAN ANTONIO – Many of the nation’s top prospects spent all week in preparation for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. It was simply an honor to be invited to play in the game, however, some of them had even more excitement which to look forward.
A number of the uncommitted recruits on both the East and West rosters announced their college commitments and one of those was Upland, Calif., defensive lineman Joe Mathis.
The four-star prospect and nation’s No. 20 overall defensive tackle had a final four of Alabama, UCLA, USC and Washington before announcing on national television for the Huskies.
“I’m headed to the University of Washington,” Mathis said during the NBC broadcast.
“I want somewhere that feels like home,” he shared of his decision process earlier in the week. “I want a place that’s really family-oriented and a coach that will be there all four years. I also want somewhere I know I’ll play early.”
Mathis, who had originally committed to Washington over a year ago before opening his recruitment back up, is the 22nd pledge for the Huskies in the class of 2013.
