COLUMBUS, Ind. – Columbus (Ind.) East has produced its fair share of major college football talent over the years.
Jones rushed for 1,610 yards and 22 touchdowns as a sophomore last season.
Class-of-2015 running back Markell Jones is on track to be next.
The 5-foot-11, 205-pound Jones was a starting linebacker as a freshman as Columbus East marched to the Final Four of the state tournament. Last season he was the featured back, rushing for 1,610 yards and 22 touchdowns in leading another run to the Semi-State round.
Jones has added 10 pounds from last season and is poised for bigger things. Many schools in the Big Ten conference have noticed and are showing early interest.
247Sports attended a recent workout at Columbus East and caught up with head coach Bob Gaddis.
“Markell the sky is the limit as far as talent,” Gaddis said. “He has a lot of God-given ability and he’s a football player. He’s a good student, has good support at the school, has good support at home. He can be as good as he wants to be. He has good strength, good speed. He’s a good running back for us. As a freshman he was a great outside linebacker. He’s had a good offseason developmentally. He’s up to 205, 210 and he’s gotten faster. He just turned 16 and we’re pretty excited about him.”
So are the college recruiters.
“We’ve had a lot of guys request tape on him and a lot of guys come see him.”
Jones plans to hit several camps this summer.
