Northwestern lands four-star QB

Park Ridge (Ill.) Maine South Top247 quarterback Matt Alviti confirmed with 247Sports that he committed to Northwestern on Saturday, choosing the Wildcats over Michigan State.

Alviti was in Evanston for the spring game after taking the ACT.

"It just came down to the right feeling in my heart," Alviti said. "Coach (Pat) Fitz(gerald) and Coach (Mick) McCall and the whole coaching staff at Northwestern, it felt like I was at home at Northwestern. The offense they run is a great fit for me.

"Definitely their academics and just the way the coaches treat you there and what it is to be a Wildcat," Alviti continued. "The guys you're going to surround yourself in the locker room with are great people. It's close to home and my family is going to be able to come and watch me play."

Besides the Wildcats and Spartans, the 6-foot-1,180-pound Alviti also held offers from Boston College, Illinois, Indiana, Nebraska, Notre Dame and Purdue.

"It was a very well informed thought out process," Maine South coach David Inserra said. "I think Matt thought it was the best fit offensively and probably even more the academic side of it and the coaching staff was the top-end part of the deal. Coach Fitzgerald does it the right way. He does a lot of things off the field to help his players excel off the field as well as on the field. I think the coaching staff is outstanding."

As a junior, Alviti threw for 2,210 yards and 29 touchdowns to just seven interceptions. He also rushed for another 609 yards and 12 scores.

The season before, Alviti led Maine South to a state championship, passing for 3,066 yards and 24 touchdowns to just seven interceptions. He added 577 yards rushing and another 12 scores.

"His arm strength and athletic ability on the field," Inserra said. "He is an outstanding character type of kid, he wants to win at everything he does and he works extremely hard. He's bringing great character to the program and huddle every day. I love, love coaching Matt Alviti."

Ranked as the nation's No. 6 dual-threat quarterback and No. 225 prospect overall, Alviti is the first commit for Northwestern in the class of 2013.
