Four-star Class of 2013 point guard Josh Newkirk (Raleigh, N.C./Word of God Christian) is sitting on several high-major scholarship offers and is getting attention from a number of additional programs.
Josh Newkirk says North Carolina State has been recruiting him hard during the early stages of his recruitment. PrepStars and 247Sports ranks him as the No. 48 overall prospect in the Class of 2013.
“Right now my offers are the same,” he said. “They are Indiana, Arizona, North Carolina State and Oklahoma State and that is it right now. North Carolina has been showing me interest lately.”
This fall, Newkirk made unofficial visits to two local Atlantic Coast Conference programs.
“I went to North Carolina and North Carolina State,” he said. “I have been to both campuses a good bit and like what I have seen from both of them. Nothing really stood out about the NC State campus because I am always there. It is just fun to get to hang out with Coach (Orlando) Early. That is my guy, he is real cool. He has been calling me since the first day he got there so we are real cool. North Carolina was great. The tradition is great there, you can’t really beat it. I got to hang out with a lot of the former players as well as the guys there now so that was really cool.”
Newkirk doesn’t plan to make a hasty decision with regards to a college choice.
“I think I will make a decision sometime during my senior,” he said. “Style of play, education and my relationship with the coaching staff are going to be the big things that help me make a decision.”
There currently is no leader, but the Wolfpack and Early certainly have made an impression.
“Nobody is really on top,” he said. “I am still open to pretty much everybody that wants to recruit me because I expect more offers but I am contacted the most by North Carolina State. I would say they are recruiting me the hardest.”
With basketball season about to start, Newkirk reflected on the offseason from the standpoint of preparation.
“I have just been working out everyday and not taking any days off,” he said. “My main goal has been getting my jump shot straight and continuing to improve my defense. I think those are the two areas I needed to focus on the most.”
