National Notes: Logan rising

Schools are starting to find out about four-star linebacker Abner Logan (Brookline, Mass./Dexter School). He picked up his second BCS conference scholarship offer on Tuesday and should be getting more in the near future as he hits multiple summer camps.

Abner Logan

Four-star linebacker Abner Logan has picked up offers from Maryland and Syracuse this month and more will come this summer when he attends multiple prospect camps.

Logan first grabbed our attention at the Badger Sport Elite 7-on-7 on the campus of Rutgers University in February. The 6-foot-2, 220-pounder is a quick-twitch athlete that can change direction and has excellent explosiveness. When you watch the film, he backs that up. Then, in late April, he again impressed at the Nike Football Training Camp in State College, Pa., and jumped on the radar even more.

Maryland offered a scholarship on Tuesday. Syracuse also offered. Florida International and Massachusetts were the first schools to offer.

“It was pretty awesome (to get the offer from the Terps),” Logan said. “I did not think they would be the next one to offer so it was really surprising and I am thankful for it. They are a great place with great academics and football team is going in the right direction.”

This summer, Logan plans to camp at Florida, Georgia Tech, Boston College, Connecticut, Penn State and Notre Dame. He hopes to have an idea of which schools he will officially visit by the end of June. A decision won’t come until after he takes those visits.

Logan is rated as the nation’s No. 211 overall prospect and No. 21 outside linebacker.

Three quick thoughts

-The state of Georgia is always important for Auburn and the Tigers reeled in a big commit in high three-star cornerback Joshua Holsey (Fairburn, Ga./Creekside) on Tuesday. This weekend, they could be getting another star from the Peach State in four-star wide receiver Jaquay Williams (Tyrone, Ga./Sandy Creek), who will announce Saturday, the same day he visits Auburn for the Tigers’ “Big Cat” recruiting weekend.

-It’s great to see three-star cornerback/safety Lucas Thompson (Winter Garden, Fla./West Orange) start to pick up steam. Miami (Fla.) offered earlier this week and South Carolina may not be far behind. Thompson has impressed us since February, where he went from a virtual unknown to clear Division I talent with an impressive showing at the Miami Under Armour Combine. Whichever school ends up landing him won’t be sorry.

Lucas Thompson

Defensive back Lucas Thompson has impressed in every setting he's performed in this spring. Miami (Fla.) offered the three-star prospect earlier this week.

-Clemson added its second four-star commit of the recruiting cycle earlier this week with the pledge of long-time lean Patrick DeStefano (Roebuck, S.C./Dorman). When we met with DeStefano last summer, we felt like he ultimately would end up with the Tigers if Alabama did not offer. The Tide did not and here we are. DeStefano’s sister attends Clemson and the Tigers signed Charone Peake and Adam Humphries out of Dorman in the 2011 class and offensive lineman Brandon Thomas in the 2010 class.

Quick hitters

-Iowa has made a move with three-star linebacker Erik Striker (Seffner, Fla./Armwood) and the Hawkeyes are now in his top two with Oklahoma. He will be in Norman for a visit June 3-5 and plans to head to Iowa City at the end of that month. We still believe that a commitment to the Sooners is likely on his visit, but watch out for the Hawkeyes if that doesn’t happen. Striker is an athletic linebacker type that could also play strong safety in college.

-Another day, another offer for defensive end Taiwan Johnson (Manvel, Texas) Illinois became the latest to offer on Tuesday joining Arizona, Nebraska, Missouri, Louisville, Northwestern, Arkansas, Kansas State, Wake Forest, Ole Miss, Arizona State, Boise State, West Virginia, Texas-San Antonio, Purdue and Washington State. He plans to visit Nebraska and Arkansas, among others, this summer.

-Quarterback Alec Morris (Allen, Texas) picked up his first verbal offer on Tuesday, Wake Forest. The 6-foot-3, 235-pound strong-armed quarterback is receiving interest from schools in the Big 12, Big 10, ACC, Mountain West and C-USA.

-Three-star cornerback Brandon Banks (Brandywine, Md./Gwynn Park) plans to camp at Pittsburgh, South Carolina, Penn State, Miami (Fla.) and LSU this summer. He already holds an offer from Maryland.

-Running back Jalen Richard (Alexandria, La./Peabody) picked up an offer from Louisiana-Monroe on Tuesday to go with previous offers from BYU, Memphis and Louisiana Tech. The 5-foot-8, 196-pounder is also receiving interest from Ole Miss, Arkansas and a number of other programs in the Southeast Region.

-Temple is the most recent offer for three-star safety Nate Smith (Warminster, Pa./Archbishop Wood). The Owls join West Virginia, South Carolina and Toledo in offering. Smith, who has an overall grade of 89 from 247Sports, impressed at safety at the Rutgers Nike Football Training Camp a couple of weeks ago.
