New five-stars highlight Top247

Start Photo Feature

The latest update in the Top247 for the class of 2014 is chock-full of major changes. In are eight new five-star prospects, with two prospects having gone from five-star to four-star.

David Sharpe

David Sharpe moves from outside the Top247 all the way to No. 8.

[Link: The 2014 Top247]

David Sharpe, OT, Jacksonville (Fla.) Providence School

The Move – From unranked to No. 8

The near 6-foot-7, 275-pound left tackle has all of the physical tools one looks for in an elite tackle prospect. He has quick and reactive feet, very impressive body quickness, the ability to bend, the agility to play in space and the frame to carry 310-320 well-proportioned pounds. A basketball player growing up to the tune of 15 points and eight rebounds as a junior, Sharpe’s best football is way out in front of him with a very high ceiling.

Myles Garrett, WDE, Arlington (Texas) Martin

The Move – From No. 80 to 10

The 6-foot-4, 245-pound Garrett continues to ascend both physically and on the field. The naturally strong and quick end has added muscle mass and weight to his frame while maintaining elite quickness and flexibility for his size. On the field, Garrett has the ability to rush the passer, and also turn and pursue.

Lamont Gaillard, DT, Fayetteville (N.C.) Pine Forest

The Move – From unranked to No. 12

The 6-foot-3, 310-pound defensive tackle possesses an explosive first step that rivals five-star defensive tackle Montravius Adams from the 2013 class. The two-way standout is also blessed with impressive natural strength and the ability to bend and play with leverage. Gaillard is another in a long line of talented defensive linemen from the state of North Carolina.

Speedy Noil, WR, New Orleans (La.) Edna Karr

The Move – From No. 55 to 17

Noil is among the most dynamic prospects in the 2014 class. The 5-foot-10.5, 176-pound high school quarterback, wide receiver and return man features 4.45 forty-yard dash speed (laser timed), a 3.98 shuttle and 42-inch vertical. On the field, he’s an elite playmaker with special change of direction and suddenness.

David Cornwell, QB, Norman (Okla.) North

The Move – From No. 61 to 20

The 6-foot-5, 235-pound signal caller has been a consistent riser in the 2014 class. The right-handed quarterback has one of the strongest arms in recent class, and underrated feet. Cornwell has proven the ability to make all the throws, change ball speeds and push the ball vertically down the field. At times, he seemingly throws darts with the flick of the wrist. As impressive as he is stepping up and delivering the ball in the pocket, he’s just as adept at throwing with accuracy on the move as a pro-style quarterback.

Adoree’ Jackson, CB, Gardena (Calif.) Junipero Serra

The Move – From No. 33 to 21

The 5-foot-11, 183-pound Jackson is not only one of the top football players on the West Coast, but also one of the most accomplished in track and field. The state champion long jumper picked off five passes as a junior, and doubles as a game changer at wide receiver. Jackson is both quick and fast with fluid hips and elite ball skills.

Dalvin Cook, RB, Miami (Fla.) Central

The Move – From No. 72 to 22

The 5-foot-11, 195-pound Cook is among the most explosive offensive prospects in the 2014 class. While he has been overshadowed in South Florida by teammate and Miami commitment Joseph Yearby, and Sony Michel; Cook continues to ascend at a fast rate. Of the very talented trio of backs, Cook has the most big-play ability and ball skills. A football player period, Cook also sees time at defensive back and in the return game for the Rockets.

Clifton Garrett, LB, Plainfield (Ill.)

The Move – From No. 38 to 23

There hasn’t been a linebacker impress more during the 2012 season and start of the combine and camp season as Garrett. The 6-foot-2, 228-pound inside linebacker has continued to add muscle mass/weight to his frame, while keeping the same elite movement, reactions, flexibility and fluidity. As impressive as Garrett is playing the run, he’s just as impressive dropping into coverage.

Moving from five-star to four – Running back Sony Michel (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./American Heritage) and offensive guard Braden Smith (Olathe, Kan./South). The 5-foot-10.5, 203-pound Michel now checks in at No. 46 in the Top247, while Smith is two spots below at 48.

    • why did Sony drop down??

      BirdManDawg

    • Jordan Sims was also very deserving of his bump too IMO. You guys are always way ahead of the curve. The rest will follow that ranking in a month.

We like Sony a lot. We just feel like Dalvin Cook is the one we like the most, and Yearby ahead of Sony.

Sony, for me, is closer to a finished product physically. Love the way he finishes runs - maximizing his power.

Cook is a just such an explosive athlete, and continues to ascend for us as a back and athlete. He also has ++ hands/ball skills at the position.

Yearby instinctively as a pure runner, ahead of most.

Bottom line is that all three are terrific players/prospects.

      Gerry Hamilton

    • BTW, sorry for the technical difficulties. Still correcting a few things this AM and through the day.

I'm a big fan. Not much at all not to like about him. Think when looking at him thinking back to Grant Hill in state in 2013, Hill has more flexibility. Sims is a bigger bodied kid too, however.

      Gerry Hamilton

    • We currently have 25 5-star prospects. Here is the state breakdown...

3 - California, Texas, Florida, Virginia and Louisiana.

      2 - Georgia and Alabama

1 - New Jersey, Illinois, Tennessee, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Maryland.

      Gerry Hamilton

    • One guy to watch in the coming months IMO is RB Royce Freeman (Imperial, Calif.) Love the feet in the hole, plays in his hips, has the ability to drops the pads/get small when needed, is strong in the hips and legs with tackle breaking ability and has very good hands - at 5-11.5, 216-pounds.

      I'm a big fan.

      Gerry Hamilton

    • Another to watch in the coming months is OG Viane Talamaiva (Corona, Calif./Centennial). If the 6-foot-3, 310-pounder has a healthy senior year, he will be a riser for us. Has just played 3 games the last two seasons.

      Gerry Hamilton

    • Do you think either of the Michigan guys will get their fifth star? I can't remember the last time Michigan had two players who are this good.

Both are definitely in the mix.

Final rankings now 10 months away.

Spring ball, huge off-season/summer for guys to keep ascending/working to maximize, senior season and all-star games.

A lot of meat left on the bone for sure.

No doubt he's an elite talent. The playmaking, wow plays - he's one of the best. The ability/potential is there.

Will be interesting to see if he maximizes that potential.

Like the two Michigan kids asked about before, he's certainly in that mix with a long ways to go.

Also, thoughts on Myles Garrett's favorites? I know Hamm has mentioned A&M is leading right now, but do you think that changes if/when he starts visiting other places?

      aggiechip22

    • And final question, what is keeping DeShawn Washington outside the 247 and/or 4 star status?

A lot of family connection to Texas A&M. I think right now it's the Aggies over TCU.

I think we can go ahead and rule out Boston College -where his bro Sean Williams played hoops. lol

I think at 100%, he is a top 2-3 RB nationally but he's not 100% healthy IMO.

Check his track stats. He was running a faster 100m dash in 7th grade (2009) than he is now as an 11th grader (2013). You don't get that much slower if you are healthy.

We have. Like him a lot. Kid has great hands...could be an excellent TE too if anyone ever wanted to try him there. Not saying I would, however.

      Gerry Hamilton

    • Gerry, what's keeping Wilton Speight from being ranked higher? What's the knock on him?

I was on the phone when I responded.

To your point - terrific motor. Always disruptive. Agree 1000%

      Gerry Hamilton

    • Gerry I agree with a lot of these rankings adjustments. Some were absolutely necessary IMO.

While I believe Bryan Mone could be a top 30 player in the country, I think you guys placed him properly at 51 for now. Within the top 150 it's just splitting hairs. Also, I hear you were a huge fan of Mone's film; join the club!

I echo Rabid's question on Wilton Speight. I know by the end of the cycle he will have proved himself at some camps/his senior season, but Speight's film is far more impressive than many of the QB's ranked ahead of him IMO. Any insight on this? Thanks.

Not Gerry, but I've seen Speight play 4 times live (I live in Richmond). To be honest, I was stunned Michigan offered. The only thing that stands out about him is his size. He's an average quarterback in the Va private school league who had to repeat a grade in order to get looks from colleges. Even UVA hasn't looked his way.

He's got some tools, but when you watch him play, you get the feeling that something's missing between the ears. This is also echoed by some off-the-field lapses in judgement.

I know Michigan fans won't like to hear that, but that's how I (and most around Richmond) see it.

He didn't repeat a grade to get looks, he had a broken collar bone and couldn't play for a season so he repeated eligibility. That is why most big time programs haven't looked his way, he did nothing for almost a full year due to the injury and didn't get his name out.

And what off the field lapses in judgment are you referring to? This is the first time I've heard that. In fact I've only heard he's a great kid off the field, including from people who live in Richmond.

You make it seem like you know a lot about what's going on because you live close to Speight but it seems like you don't know much at all about him, so I ask again, hoping for an answer from Gerry.
