Progress? Yes and No

When Charlie Strong turned down Tennessee to stay at Louisville, he told reporters on Thursday that it was his way of thanking the school and athletic director Tom Jurich for their faith in him.

“He gave me my first chance to be a head football coach after being an assistant for 27 years. I was always on everyone’s short list, but Tom let me know from the very beginning I was the only one on his list,” Strong said. “His unwavering loyalty in me and my vision has always been there.”

Here’s what Strong didn’t say: “I didn’t want to go somewhere else and get Embree’d.”

    • This and the Rooney rule is ridiculous. Waiting for the rule that states every team must have a white RB on the depth chart.

    • Most people who draw race into any issue have an agenda and know that the race card will draw interest as an ignition point.

Most realists will say that the best candidate gets hired for the job, and race should never be a factor. Some of these rules are actually insulting to AA coaches. No one wants to get hired just because they fill a demographic. It is sad how our country continues to bring race into everything. Where I live and the people I interact with daily, race is a non -issue. For most kids/recruits these days, race is not an issue. Again, people bring race in to incite the older masses. Just makes no sense to me....

      I agree with this.

    • Stupid rule to begin with. Soon, every roster will need a white RB, black kicker, and yellow WR.

      WHO CARES??????

Whoever is the best for the job, will likely get the job. Forcing teams to interview a black coach is racist in itself, and If I were black and was asked to interview just because of that fact, I would be highly offended and refuse the interview.

The more this country tries to move forward, the more people make up stupid things like this and holds it back.

    • Forcing people to interview a black coach is ridiculous, no way around it. As an ND fan, Tyrone Willingham pulled the race card the second he got fired even though he spent more time on golf coarses than the recruiting trail. How do coaches get HC jobs? They become coordinators!! How often do black head coaches hire black assistants? NEVER!! That's the real race issue, now that could easily be attributed to "not wanting to step on feet" or " being that guy" but jobs don't fall from the sky, if you're a black HC and you're staff is all white and YOU'RE not giving the same opportunities you were given...how can you turn face and say blacks aren't given fair shots?

White people hate Black people unless they (blacks) play for their team.

Why do we still talk about this?

Because Publications like SportingNews use it to garner attention.

      wrong!
If a black player is on my team and he's playing crappy, i hate him. I only like the good black players.

    • I would like to see a more African Americans get coaching jobs in college football. Some of the reasons why this person didn't get the head coaching job just confuses me. I also believe in the statement that the HOKIEH8R said in his statement that the Rooney rule is ridiculous. Waiting for the that states that every team must have a white RB on the depth chart. I just think that we should give every African American a chance to succeed in the future in whatever profession he dicides on whether it be coaching in football or somewhere else.

    • People think the Rooney Rule is ridiculous? Oy vey. And the white RB argument is ridiculous. All white kids have every opportunity to be a starting RB. Black aspiring coaches never had much of an opportunity before 2002/3.

I'm as white as a ghost, but it's fairly obvious the rule has been a success.

Although I am biased. I have done extensive legal research on the issue and helped with a book on the subject.

Agreed. But the best man sometimes never had a shot. Since you're an OSU fan, Marvin Lewis was passed up for a bunch of jobs without even an interview even though he orchestrated the Ravens incredible defense in the early 2000's. He never had an interview until the Bengals gave him one as part of the Rooney rule. He ended up getting the job and bringing a franchise that had been way down into respectability. The Bengals were terrible for a long time before him and he never would have had an interview if the Rooney Rule wasn't in place.

The best people, white, black, hispanic, women, etc. should all have a shot, and before the rule it wasn't always the case. Even now, many minority candidates are passed up for interviews, but at least someone has to be interviewed. It's an imperfect solution to a problem that has no solution. It is better than the pre Rooney Rule days when there were 6 minority head coaches in history, and one of them was a player/coach in 1921.
