New UCLA coach Jim Mora Jr. has his new quarterback of the future. Eddie Printz Jr. had a west coast tour scheduled over the weekend with plans to visit UCLA, USC and Cal. But after his first stop in Westwood, the four-star signal-caller decided that he had seen all he needed to see and committed to the Bruins.
Previously, Printz had been committed to SMU but after June Jones’ flirtation with the Arizona State job, he backed off of that pledge. With Monday’s commitment to UCLA, Printz seems to be done with the process early.
Printz’s father, Eddie Printz Sr. talked about what drew the Marrieta (Ga.) Lassiter standout to the west coast.
“He’s basically going to be the first quarterback they bring in and he can put his signature on the program,” said the elder Printz. “He really has a chance to make a name for himself. Besides sports and everything, UCLA was one of the schools he was considering because they have a great business and economics program. With the coaching, the academics side of it and the opportunity to play early it was a great fit.”
Though UCLA may not be done with their quarterback recruiting, Printz is not worried about any other arms coming in with the 2013 class.
“They’re going to bring in one more (quarterback),” said Printz Sr. “Thery’re looking for someone that’s a duel-threat guy. They told him that when they first offered. He’s not worried about competing.”
The early commitment was always in the plans for Printz as he plans to take extra classes during the spring and summer to prepare him for an early graduation and enrollment. Now his only focus is to help the UCLA staff recruit.
“He really wanted to get that decision out of the way early so that he can build a class and help recruit. He’s already been on the phone with some guys since he committed.”
Printz is currently rated as a four-star prospect and No. 226 in the Top247 for the class of 2013.
