Under Armour Combine Report

This year’s crop of talent at the Under Armour All-America Combine, held last Friday at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla., was one of the deepest groups in the history of the event. While it’s normally stacked with high-end FBS talent, this year’s group was particularly impressive.

George Campbell

Class of 2015 wide receiver George Campbell had a special showing Friday at the Under Armour All-America Combine in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Prospects were tested in a variety of ways, including 40-yard dash (straight line speed), vertical (explosiveness), pro agility shuttle (quickness, lateral quickness and change of direction), L-cone (change of direction, quickness), broad jump (explosiveness, athleticism), the bench press (strength) and the vertical leap (explosiveness, athleticism). They also participated in position drills and one-on-ones.

MVP

While there wasn’t an official combine MVP, we are going with class of 2015 wide receiver George Campbell (Tarpon Springs, Fla./East Lake). The teammate of Top247 wide receiver Artavis Scott checked in at 6-foot-2 ¾ and 177-pounds and ripped off impressive times of 4.44 seconds in the 40-yard dash, 4.2 in the pro-agility shuttle and 6.9 in the L-cone drill. Throw in a 32-inch vertical and the sophomore turned in a jaw dropping performance. In limited reps, Campbell also showed the quickness off the line of scrimmage, change of direction and ability to track and high-point the ball that he showed at Florida’s Friday Night Lights last summer, where he also was the top overall prospect. Campbell currently holds verbal offers from Michigan, South Florida, Vanderbilt, UCF and N.C. State.

State of Alabama represents

Two of the top prospects in attendance Friday were Alabama commitment Bo Scarbrough (Tucaloosa, Ala./Northridge) and cornerback Marlon Humphrey (Hoover, Ala.). The two five-star rated prospects by 247Sports delivered with their performance.

Scarbrough measured 6-foot-1 ½ and 215-pounds and ran a best 40-yard of 4.59. The versatile athlete that worked out at wide receiver also ripped off a uber impressive 4.09 pro-agility shuttle and 6.78 L-cone drill. Throw in a 31-inch vertical, a 10’3” broad jump and 16 reps of 185-pounds on the bench, and only Campbell could say he had a more impressive performance. At wide receiver during on-on-ones, Scarborugh fought the ball and didn’t have the look of a natural receiver. We like the Crimson Tide commitment at outside linebacker long term in a 3-4 alignment.

Humphrey was nearly as impressive in testing clocking a 4.48 40 at 5-foot-11 ¾ and 179-pounds. He added a 4.27 pro-agility shuttle, 6.76 L-cone and 32-inch vertical and was solid in one-on-one’s showing the ability to stay attached and react as well as any defensive back in attendance.

Coming out party for Holmes

Chris Godwin

Delaware Class of 2014 receiver Chris Godwin turned in an impressive 4.48 40-yard dash at 197 pounds during Friday's Under Armour All-America Combine at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Class of 2014 wide receiver Corey Holmes (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) came on late in the season for state champion St. Thomas Aquinas, but he took his recruitment to another level late last week. Holmes checked in at 6-foot-1 ¾ and 166-pounds and ripped off impressive times of 4.48 in the forty yard dash, 4.15 in the pro-agility shuttle and a blazing 6.72 in the L-cone. Throw in a 35.5-inch vertical and Holmes and Campbell were easily the two most impressive wide receivers prospects in the testing portion of the combine. Holmes claims verbal offers from Michigan, Notre Dame, Florida, Florida State and Wisconsin among others.

While slot wide receiver prospect Braxton Berrios (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road) didn’t have his own coming out party on Friday, the 5-foot-8 ¼, 172-pounder proved that he belongs in the four-star conversation. While his 40 time of 4.67 isn’t an attention grabber, his change of direction ability is on a very elite level. The diminutive pass catcher with very natural ball skills and terrific hands and timing smoked the pro-agility shuttle to the tune of 3.98, and added a 6.89 L-cone and 33-inch vertical. North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia Tech and Duke are among Berrios’ early offers with more expected in the coming week and months.

Another 2014 wide receiver that turned in a quality testing day was Chris Godwin (Middletown, Del.), Godwin checked in at 6-foot-1 3/4 and 197-pounds and clocked an impressive 4.48 40. He added a 4.31 pro-agility shuttle, 6.9 L-cone and 9-inch vertical. Among Godwin’s early offers are Boston College and Connecticut and he is getting interest from South Carolina and others.

2014 OLs stand out

The offensive line prospect everyone in attendance was waiting to see was Braden Smith (Olathe, Kan./South). Well Smith checked just as expected at 6-foot-6 ¼ and 285-pounds. The uber-flexible Smith tested pretty well too clocking a 5.12 40, 4.65 pro-agility shuttle and 35 1/2 –inch vertical. Smith, who has shorter arms than ideally are desired at tackle, threw up a combine best 39 reps of 185-pounds on the bench press. In one-on-one’s, Smith struggled a bit in space on the edge. Whether he plays guard, which is where we project him, or tackle, he will be flat back road-grater in the run game with the ability to pull. Smith has verbal offers from nearly every top program in the country.

Another guard prospect that turned in a solid testing day was Garrett Brumfield (Baton Rouge, La./University Lab). Brumfield, who has early offers from Florida, Florida State, LSU and Texas A&M among others, checked in at 6-foot-2 ¾ and 268-pounds. He recorded a 5.07 40, an impressive 4.6 pro-agility shuttle, a 32.5-inch vertical and threw up 23 reps of 185-pounds on the bench.

Two of the biggest prospects (size-wise) on hand were Orlando Brown Jr. (Suwanee, Ga./Peachtree Ridge) and Denzel Ward (Chicago, Il./Hales Franciscan). Brown came it at 6-foot-7 ½ and 345-pounds and had the look of an improving prospect in one-on-one’s. His tenacity and attitude are certainly evident, and now it’s just a matter of physical and technical development. Brown, who is a high-ceiling prospect, claims verbal offers from many of the nations top programs. Ward also came in at 6-foot-7 ½, but weighed 295-pounds with a frame that has scary long-term potential. The Michigan commitment, who recently visit Florida and was offered, is very quick for his size in his initial movement and has the baseline skill set to develop into an elite tackle prospect.

    • Bo at OLB is interesting. I know with the type of RB talent we are gathering it might help him get on the field a little earlier. 6'1" 1/2 is pushing it for height in our system, though. However, Saban did say he wanted to go after a few more athletic LB's to help out in the passing game. Guess we will see. Good stuff.

    • Godwin has a Penn State offer too.

How was Andrew Ford's arm strength? That's a pretty decent 40 time for him.

Good 40 time for Johnathan Thomas. Any indication on his feelings towards PSU?

      Thanks for the notes, Gerry.

Huge red flag that he's talking about wanting to play wide receiver and believes he is.

You have a hard time getting guys like that to buy in on defense.

I personally think he's a running back and just needs to chill and do what he's been great at, but my guess is a stupid person has gotten in his ear and told him he's going to get hurt playing that spot and that he actually has the same upside at receiver.

    • -A little suprised at some of Berrios' testing numbers given how he dominated the Charlotte Sparq in the Spring 2012. 40 time was better in Charlotte on "relative" basis given the fastest times at each event.

-Everyone knows that the 6'2", 215 Bo Scarbrough (2014) is rocked-up/diesel but interesting that 5'10', 170-175, 2015 prospect Bryce Love did 20 bench press reps at 185 pounds at the US Army Combine while Scarbrough did 16 reps. Love is 40 pounds lighter and 1 year younger but did more bench reps.

Yeah Berrios is faster than what he ran at Under Armour based on the other data I've seen.

Ford does need to let it rip more, as I know that is a question on him - not because he doesn't have plus arm strength, but it's more of an unknown.

He throws a lot of timing and touch passes, and did Friday - in limited reps.

Thomas would be interested in Penn State based on my short convo, but he's from Virginia and Virginia Tech was his favorite growing up. They are the favorite.

In watching him, 40 time is irrelevant. He's a slot WR with elite COD. His shuttle and L-cone were among the very best - and I do believe that is what plays into his on the field.

I've always liked Bo as an OLB type. An elite athlete at OLB with a 6-foot-2, 245-40-pound frame, plus COD, is physical and is going to a school that I can see him ending up there.

Also with his knee injury history, not sure taking handoffs with those long legs and knees exposed is his best chance for career longevity.

Tough call. Long ways to go. I lean more to RT, but he's going to be a late developer. What he looks like today is likely going to be a lot different this time next year.

    • JC or Gerry what do you guys think about Josh Frazier? I have seen him and bijon Jackson play more than 2 times each while Frazier has the better size they both play about the same. I'd take Frazier bc of his size but both these guys are absolute studs.

How good and how high do you see Frazier getting? Also sorry to bring someone else up but all I heard was how great Bijon Jackson did at his combine then got an 87 slapped on him I think? Most consider him the 2nd best prospect in the state.

Do you guys know the DTs we are on for next year? Josh Frazier, Bijon Jackson(already committed), Craig Evans stud DT from Madison WI, Chuck Ota most underrated player in AR next year, Enoch Smith Jr from IL did very well at the SF combine(has family in AR), and Dylan Thompson from IL who also did very well at SF Combine those are the main ones we are on. I expect to take 4-5 at least Jackson, Frazier, Ota, and Smith JR but there is no way we turn down Craig Evans or Dylan Thompson. Just seeing if you knew we were on them, what you thought our chances are, and what you thought about all of them?

      jrohawg35

    • Josh Frazier is a nose/zero deluxe. While not necessarily weight room strong yet, he plays strong and powerful and will be a handful for any center.

He's one of those guys that combine testing results are nearly meaningless as he will be asked to work in short space, so some quickness to go with his power and 335'ish pounds is all that he really needs (technique and understanding a given). Looked pretty flexible too - can play with pretty low pad level for his size.

      Didn't test as well.

Nothing jumped out one way or the other - with the understanding that there were a lot of kids and 7-on-7 was going on both ends of the field at the same time. If one is looking one way, you can easily miss something on the other end.
