Vatuvei likes the Trojans

Pio Vatuvei

Pio Vatuvei looked good in workouts at "The Opening" on Thursday.

BEAVERTON, Ore.- It comes as no surprise that defensive end Pio Vatuvei (Patterson, Calif.) has plenty of options when it comes to his recruitment. The 6-foot-3, 230-pounder displayed cat quickness off the ball during one-on-ones on Thursday during the training camp portion of Nike’s “The Opening” event on the Nike Campus.

On the recruiting front, Vatuvei has offers from Arizona, Idaho, Nevada, Utah State, Boise State, Washington, Washington State, Colorado, Fresno State and California.

“There are some schools I am mainly looking at,” he said. “Arizona, Cal, Washington, Utah, Oregon State, Boise State and USC also if they were to offer and Washington State. My parents really like Cal, so I like them too.”

Vatuvei plans official visits to Arizona, Oregon State and says he will take an unofficial visit to Cal this season “since it’s close.” If USC were to offer, though, the visit plans could be all for naught.

“I could wait awhile on my decision, but USC said that they may offer in August,” he said. “If they offer, that may push me into a commitment. They are a great team and one of my favorite team growing up.”

He talked about what he is going to be looking for in a school he ultimately picks.

“My relationship with the coaching staff, the environment and academics,” he said.
