The first week of the college football season, a Texas Tech true freshman quarterback earned the title of 247Sports National True Freshman of the Week. Fast forward seven weeks and Texas Tech is home to the award again and again it’s a true freshman quarterback, a different one.
Davis Webb helped lead Texas Tech back from an 11-point second-half deficit.
Webb’s stat line on Saturday in a 37-27 win over West Virginia included 36 completions on 50 pass attempts and 462 yards through the air. It also included two touchdown passes, the second of which put the finishing touches on a comeback victory that saw the Red Raiders trailing by 11 late in the 3rd quarter.
The big day for Webb wasn’t unexpected. It was his second 400-yard performance in as many weeks. Last week was Webb’s first start, filling in for Mayfield, his injured classmate. All he did was earn True Freshman of the Week consideration with 415 yards in a win over Iowa State.
His 462 yards in his second start were enough to give Webb the single-game freshman passing record at Texas Tech. More importantly, Webb helped the Red Raiders score 21 unanswered points in the second half en route to a conference victory.
Webb came to Texas Tech in the class of 2013 as a three-star recruit, ranked by 247Sports as the No. 28 pro-style quarterback in the country. He committed to the Red Raiders all the way back in May of 2012. In December, the Red Raiders hired a new head coach in Kliff Kingsbury and Webb, an early enrollee in January stayed on board despite offers from TCU, Iowa and Indiana.
The Prosper, Texas native threw for more than 2,500 yards during his junior and senior seasons at Prosper High School. He also reached the finals of the Elite 11 where he made a national name for himself.
