ancestry (dot) come - anyone used this?

  • so...through some basic research I've discovered my ancestors are Irish, Welsh, or Scottish. For some reason I have become interested in narrowing it down recently...has anyone ever paid for a subscription to that site and used it and with what success? how much work did it take?

    for instance, I'd probably start with my great grandfather and trace it back until I got to where my great-great-whatever came over through Ellis Island or wherever....and then figure out from there where they were from and how far I can trace it back. Seems like a fun project. Can this be done for their $10/month price? Or is it typically incomplete info/etc...

    We may be going to Ireland in the fall and it sure would be fun if we could figure out exactly where my ancestors are from and go there.

    Anyone done this?

  • I can't give you specific details since I wasn't the one to do it, but my sister has used it. She said it was absolutely worth it, and that it did everything that she wanted to do(Find out which country our families originated form). Definitely a favorable review form her.

  • My uncle used it and gave all of us a leather bound book for Christmas this year. It probably has around 350 pages in it, dating all the way back to the 1200's. I think he has been using it for close to 4 years and steadily finding more information.

    The book is real cool, I haven't had tons of time to look thru it, but from what I've seen it works real well.

  • It can be useful or not. My father tried it for his side of the family and got very little to nothing. He did the leg work himself and traced our family back to early 1800's Virginia and then it went cold. My aunt did the same thing for my mother's side of the family and she got the entire family tree going all the way back to London Derry, Ireland. It really just depends on what is out there and available on your family.
