10 most overrated bands of all time

  • BetterOff said...

I hate Dave, but the talent in his band is unreal.

I agree with Phish as a band, but individually they are all 4 insanely talented.

Meh. I have a really hard time calling what jam bands do "talent". They do have a feel for melodies and know their scales, I guess, but I just don't see it as real talent in the sense I'd use the word with Slash or Clapton.

Dave definitely belongs on the list. After considering the WSP post above, I'm not sure Phish does. I don't consider WSP to be highly rated enough to be overrated and I kind of feel the same way about Phish.

KISS definitely needs to be on the list as mentioned above too. Maybe they should go there in Phish's place and they should certainly be above AC/DC. Again, not because AC/DC is better, just because the KISS hype is ridiculous.

    I love Bread.

The stuff that him and Brian Wilson did together was great.

Please tell me you are a Jeff Buckley fan!

The only bad thing about Buckley is the shortness of his career. Sad. As far as songwriters I'd also have to add Steve Porcaro to that list.

    Bread is......phenomenal.

  • Why does everybody in the world seclude their music listening to the radio and only the most popular of music. There really are a lot of great bands out there.

How about some of these? Anybody!?

A lot of bands are overrated! I am not going to be the one that says I only listen to Indie music and ALL radio music is junk, but try to expand your horizons a bit

Ignorance. Go away. People like you annoy me. How the hell do you know what I listen to or if it has ever even seen a radio wave? You don't. Get your snooty nose out of the sky and move along. You aren't better than anyone simply because you can name bands I've never heard. I could do the same to you and probably do it longer.

Ignorance? As I stated, I am not trying to say I listen to just Indie music and that Radio is junk, but apparently you missed that part. I was simply saying it would be nice to hear some other 'under the radar' bands discussed. Sorry for ruffling your feathers.

Can't agree with the Beach Boys. Those guys changed a lot about recording and the way an album was put together, but I can go with the rest.

Popular doesn't always mean talented and some of these bands were way more popular than talented.

Saw the Beach Boys in Tunica a few years back and John Stamos showed up and played with them.

Here's my list. Note that overrated doesn't mean "bad". It means overrated. I really like a several of these bands, but disagree that they're all they're cracked up to be. Of course, I hate most of them, with U2 and Radiohead heading that list up.

    10) Nirvana 9) Rolling Stones 8) Green Day 7) AC/DC 6) Phish 5) Dave Matthews Band 4) REM 3) Radiohead 2) U2 1) The Beatles

Why do you say that DMB is overrated?

Then start a "Top 10 Most Underrated Bands" thread. Under the radar and overrated should usually be mutually exclusive.

Why do you say that DMB is overrated?

Because Dave has no imagination and everything he does sounds like boring crap. Combine that with the fact that the band has more followers than Dave's talent should earn him and you've got one of the most overrated bands of all time.

  • I can put up with hearing Nirvana is overrated even though I like them.... I can see how they would be overrated... even Radiohead for that matter...

But saying either the Beatles or the Stones are overrated is just plain dumb. What ratings are we going off of, just your own personal opinion of where they stand in the world?

    Don't agree with DMB.

Carter Beauford is one of the best drummers in the world. I'm not a DMB fan, but I call it like I see it.

  • Some people don't like the jamband scene. I, myself, being a 60's and 70's fan love it, as it is what music was then. If it couldn't be made live on stage, it didn't go on the album either.

Everything may not always be as precise as Slash or some of the studio generated musicians, but that is because they are playing a different show with different solos every night. One of the things that make improv so great is you never know what will happen. Hearing every song played the same way all the time is boring to me.

Everything in music is personal opinions. There is really no right or wrong.

Some people think Jimi is the best guitar player ever, some think SRV is the best ever. There is no right or wrong in that. Its all opinion.

I do not bash people for logical opinions. Now if they say Justin Bieber is one of the best musicians ever, then I'll laugh at their face. lulz

But if you have a logical opinion then there is no right or wrong.

There is no formula that says Jimi was better then SRV. Its purely off of personal opinions.

Agreed, but still don't see the Beatles or Stones being overrated. But hey, I like their music so maybe I'm biased.

Splitting hairs between Jimi and SRV, both are ridiculous

I don't either. I didn't mean to quote you. my bad.

But yeah, I hate when people try say who is better between Jimi and SRV. Its just dumb.

I have a preference between the 2, and its SRV. But I'm not gonna say SRV is better then Jimi, or that Jimi is better then SRV.

I'm not saying either band sucked. I'm a bit of a Stones fan. Don't care much for the Beatles but I'm not saying they sucked. When I say overrated, I'm talking about the level of hype generated relative to the talent level of the band. If we agree that Nirvana, who I also like, is overrated in spite of being the face of a music revolution, you can't say that the Beatles aren't overrated simply BECAUSE they were the face of a music revolution. Nirvana wasn't that talented, at least not technically (read: technique-wise). Neither were the Beatles. There are countless no-name bands much more talented than they ever were. Same goes for the Stones, but to a lesser extent.

To break down and rank guitarists, I think you have to break that down into categories. As for originality, Hendrix was the best to ever touch a guitar. He couldn't hold a candle to SRV's precision. There's no way to say one was better all around than the other though.

The Beatles (or at least their engineers) pioneered a lot of audio tricks on analog equipment that can now be purchased in little digital boxes for 50 bucks a pop.

Anybody can make those sounds now and do production tricks with ease, but the Beatles and their team basically paved the way and figured out how to make that stuff happen the hard way.

But anyway, they weren't technical freaks on their instruments if that is what you mean by talented.
