Uggla is the Adam Dunn of 2B. Most only see a crappy average and overlook his on base % (.350). Not many 2B have his power. I'm not a Braves fan and don't think it was a good trade or signing given the money for a guy on the wrong side of 30 but he is still a pretty good 2B. Given his age I don't see a rebound to his Marlin days though.

Big day for y'all with Sheets pitching. A bad performance could put more pressure on the FO.

Uggla isn't putting up the numbers he is being paid to it up. His $13 mil per yr is to be an RBI machine. Hard for him to do that when he continually whiffs. Plus you can't really compare Uggla to Dunn. I mean 28 HR and 65 RBI doesn't come close to comparing to 12 HR and 46 RBI. Uggla is one of the worst fielding 2B and again is being paid to put drive in runs, not win a gold glove. He isn't coming close to producing offensively and hasn't since we signed him.

If you look at OWAR among 2B, Uggla is 8th and he isn't paid to be that low.

  • totally agree with you - love Uggla but he has to play more consistently for us to be a better baseball team ; hope Sheets pitches well b/c other than Hudson we dont have any great alternatives right now

Let's hope because I picked him up on my fantasy team. The Braves pitching has went downhill drastically and I think we need a better pitching coach. Teheran isn't pitching well, so we have very limited options. If the Braves don't upgrade prior to the deadline, then the season is essentially over.

  • agree although there is hope that these guys will start pitching better at the end of the season ; losing Beachy has really hurt this team this year

I compared them bc they are low average guys with good on base. According to Fangraphs Uggla has the 6th best WAR amoung 2B (I'm not counting Zobriest), his D is +1.7(around average, but well below average for career), 3rd out of 2B in HRs, 5th in on base %, 2nd in BB% at 15.7% and runs and 4th in RBIs. They have a value break down also and he has been worth 10.3 million year to date. When you compare him to 2B he is still pretty good well above league average.

  • fair enough but he can certainly play much better than he has over the last month of the season ; he will have an amazing game like last night but really struggles to even hit the ball on most nights which is really hurting the team right now

That extra $3 mil would come in very handy for a trade or signing a top pitcher. If he isn't putting up his worth, then what good is he? You just proved my point. Uggla isn't a bad option, just for less money. What's happening with Uggla is what happened to the Braves with Lowe. overpaying a guy that isnt close to producing his contract.

  • agreed although there is still plenty of time for the guy to come back and be a bad arse player for us

He has been worth over 10 million and has two months to play. He will outplay his contract this year. Granted he is set to make 13 mill in 2013-15 and the last year he will be 35. Big long term deals are rarely worth it bc the back end.

There is time, but unless he puts him his career avg then he isn't worth the money. Uggla hitting .255 is a longshot at best right now. he hasn't even sniffed .240 and that's ridiculous. Just a lot of frustration with the big contracts the Braves have thrown away lately.

  • dont disagree but if the guy just plays his average the rest of the way its going to really help this team for the remainder of year ; im just glad that McCann is playing soo much better the last month b/c he was batting a horrible 224 for awhile

The most important thing a hitter can do is not make an out. You have to look at his on base % not his average. He is walking almost 16% of his ABs which is as good as a base hit.

He hasn't produced his worth since arriving, so how is that going to change?

Him getting on base is important, but not as important when you are hitting 7th in the lineup with Janish and the pitcher coming up afterwards. If he was hitting his career average (.255), he would be 4th or 5th and in that case a BB would be very important.

I don't know how else to gauge value and worth but according to Fangraphs he has produced his worth the past two seasons and will exceed it this year. Again that just for the past two Braves seasons and he will continue to regress into his mid 30s like most everyone else post steroid era.

  • i hope all of our guys continue to make it back to playing well esp our pitching - its been really poor other than Hudson the other night and our boys first game back after a 2 year vacation

  • And he K's yet again. He doesn't even look good at the plate. Hell... cant even foul a ball off to force extra pitches.

Already researched him thoroughly but thanks for the link. Had it pulled up already brother. Unless he turns it on over the next 2 months, then Wren and the Braves overpaid for another player. Other teams can afford to do it, but Atlanta can't with their limited self imposed spending restrictions.

  • need new ownership and soon - hard to compete with teams that are paying players twice what we pay ours ; do agree with the fact that he hasnt consistently played well this year but again if he just hits his average the rest of the year then we should be able to contend for a playoff spot

Overpaying for Uggla wouldn't matter a bit, if he had an owner that would enable us to spend. We don't, so it's extremely important for everyone to put up what their contract calls for.

  • very true statement but stating the obvious here - we didnt know that we were overpaying for him at the time we signed him to the contract ; i wish we would overpay M Bourne for the next 5 years and settle that issue for awhile

He is due a big contract, but doubt the Braves will be able to compete if other teams want him.
