2012 VW Jetta TDI or 2012 Ford Focus – Any owners?

  • I'm planning on selling my tC sometime in the middle of next year for a car more economical (but still fun) to drive in the Atlanta area. Specifically, moving from a coupe to a sedan and moving from a manual to an automatic. I considered a lot of factors (gas mileage, price, performance, cargo space, styling, fun) and have narrowed my search down to one of these two. Wanted to see if anyone on tBB owned one or knew someone who did and can give their opinions. I've looked at and driven both and like them both, so I'm looking for as much input as I can before I begin seriously thinking purchase.

  • Don't own a Jetta, but I own a GTI. Absolutely LOVE my Volkswagen. Seriously, go test drive that car. It's hard to explain, but if you really want to be happy with the car you drive, and not just own a car because you need to, check out VW. Something about them...obviously I'm a tad biased, but I feel like if there's another VW owner ITT, he'd back me up.

A lot of the reports I've read on the new Jettas are not all that great EXCEPT for the TDI model. Plus, nearly 50mpg is pretty ridiculous, as is 236 lb/ft of torque for an engine only putting out 140 HP. I told myself after driving an I4 all these years in my tC that I wanted to upgrade to a "big boy" car, something with at least a V6. Problem is, big boy cars are not affordable or great at the pump in most cases. Guess I'll have to keep waiting for that big money job or when I finally start building my dream 1970 GTO.

A friend of mine has the GLI and loves it, which was a big reason I gave VW a look in the beginning. I settled on the TDI model because of the gas mileage and the ridiculous torque for it's engine size. That and, after driving it, it has great closing speed on the highway. Really impressed with it.

biggrin. The VW holds it's value better than the ford.

Really? Hadn't heard that but that's something worth noting. The thing about the VW I like most is that I love diesel engines. It'll get around 500 miles per fill up (my tC gets just shy of 300, same size tank... what a joke) and can last up to 400,000-500,000 miles. That's a long ass time. The thing is, the Focus still gets good mileage (27/37) and IMO looks better than the Jetta (in the 5-door hatchback version). However, Ford as of late doesn't have the greatest reputation for long-lasting vehicles outside of their trucks. But, part of me does feel the patriotic duty to support domestic automakers, especially since my current car is a Toyota and my last car was an Acura Integra.

Diesel engines are going to have great torque. Get the TDI.

But like Cuth said, they are both pretty damn feminine.

If you tight enough with your money that gas mileage is a big factor in your next purchase, then I strongly suggest NOT buying a new car. It is completely uneconomical to purchase a new vehicle for "economical" reasons. No amount of saved gas will break you even in the long run. It would be a pretty dumb decision in a financial sense.

I meant economical in the mileage/upkeep/drivability in the city sense. I'm going to get $10,000-$12,000 for my car now and my parents have agreed to help me with the other half of the price while I'm starting my job. Either car brand new, minus what I sell mine for, will run $8,000-$12,000 to cover. I'm using it to help build my credit, too.

BTW, I never saw either car as feminine. Hell, it's not like I'm looking to by a Mini Cooper. I mean, I'd love to get a 'Stang or a GLI or a Mazdaspeed3 but other factors limited my choices when it came to some of those options.

I can call it whatever I want. There won't be a badge left on that thing, sans maybe the VW one.

Still dude, seriously my best advice to someone who is just starting out would be not to buy a new car. A car is a total luxury. Let your income/debt ratio be your credit. Adding $25k in car debt is not a good way to build credit, imo. Buy something that you can afford without the help of your parents or keep what you have now.

I am being completely real with you. That $10-12k from your parents would be much better utilized as a cash cushion for you to build on as your career develops. Buying a new car is the same as burning it slowly. Cars depreciate.

No, you're totally right. But I've been into the mod scene since I was 15 and, regardless of the level of work done, all of my cars will have some done. I just enjoy the hobby too much. I mean, here's what I drive now, all be it a couple years and quite a bit of work ago:

  • i have a 2011 Jetta SE, not TDI, but its a great vehicle. I actually work for a VW dealership and the Jetta TDIs are phenominal and everybody loves them. Great MPG, handling is top notch, and i just like the simple and smooth styling. I might be biased, but i say the Jetta TDI all day

You'd be a good person to ask: How many years as the Jetta TDI been in production now? The 2012 model I looked at comes in right around $23,000. What would the sticker price be on a 2011? 2010? Etc.?

My girlfriend drove a Jetta for a few years. She loved the car when it was working, but it gave her problems frequently and was a bitch to have work done on.

On the other hand, the ford will be a little more boring but the safer choice.

This opinion has nothing to do with any knowledge of automobiles, but instead my personal history with both cars.
