2013 Atlanta Braves opinion

  • I really like the pitching staff but it appears to be at it's lowest point in a few years.
    - Tim Hudson is getting old but still going strong
    - Brandon Beachy is great but they don't know if he's going to play this year or not
    - Kris Medlan was a big surprise but let's see how he goes through a whole season
    - Mike Minor- sucks but decent for a #4-5 spot
    - Julio Teheran is the most overrated overhyped pitcher that I have ever seen.. this guy is just awful
    - Kimbrel, Venters, O'flaherty, Walden are some of the best relievers in the game
    Offense
    - Heyward is primed for a big time breakout year
    - Justin Upton was a big pickup even getting rid of Martin Prado. He's one of the best in the game
    - BJ Upton- great overrall player, good speed and power. good replacement for Bourne
    - Juan Franciso- is no Chipper, they need to get another 3B
    - Andrelton Simmons- I believe they are going to see if he breaks out, if not, a trade comes
    - Dan Uggla- needs to be traded 'nuff said
    - Freddie Freeman- is a great player.. solid defense
    - Brian McCann- past his prime but has become the face of the team, still a great hitter

anyone agree or disagree with anything I put?

Disagree with Minor sucking. He's a young guy that had a rough first half, but he had an unbelievable 2nd half. He's going to have a really good year.

Disagree with Teheran. He's 21. For the love of god give him some time.

Agree on bullpen. It's fantastic. We'll bring some serious sh*t late in games.

My worry with the offense is the lack of a leadoff hitter.

Really looking forward to seeing how the Upton experiment works out.

  • They will not under any circumstances trade Simmons. Francisco and Johnson will have a more productive year at 3b than chipper has the last few years. Uggla isnt going anywhere. Minor wins 15 games this year.

  • I want to see more from Teheran. And I don't believe BlowJob Upton is a great player. I have said for a while he is a cancer. Hopefully playing with his brother changes that. No question the talent is there

There's two ways to look at it. The first way is he'll stay the moody, underachieving CFer he was in Tampa. The second way is that he'll benefit from a change of scenery (getting away from Madden, changing leagues, and playing with his brother) and he'll play better than he has.

There was an ESPN article a while back that I think hit the nail on the head. The Upton experiment has boom or bust potential. However, it's a move that must be made; adding the Upton brothers to Heyward just makes the Braves team too good on paper.

  • Two things I forgot to add or change
    - Chris Johnson had a great year last year to give the Braves good production from 3B
    - Maholm had a decent stretch last year, I think he'll be a decent pitcher

  • Pitching will probably be better than last year, still feel like our line up lacks the power necessary when they get to the playoffs.

  • I'm not a Braves fan but they are in a great situation for the next five years or so, problem is so are the Nats. I'm in the minority but even in a down year I think Uggla is very underrated by y'all and Freeman over rated. Sure Uggla Ks a ton but he gives you in a down year similar offensive production from the middle IF than Freeman does at 1B, a power position. He might be over paid but honestly there aren't many 2B I'd take over him. Cano, Pedroia, Kinsler, Kipnis, Philips and Walker might be it.

  • Will be near the bottom of the NL in clutch hitting. A lot of strikeouts. It will be their demise.

  • Uggla is NOT better than Freeman... Freeman had 4 more Homeruns last year, average was .039 higher, 16 more RBI's and scored 5 more runs all of this while Dan Uggla struck out almost 40 more times than Freeman

Also Freeman was 5th in homeruns among NL 1st baseman but yet he isn't a productive power hitter?

  • I honestly think Simmons will be a dang good lead off man and if he stays healthy an easy choice for a Gold Glove this year and many more years to come! Could be the best SS in the NL

  • to be fair, I wasn't really keeping up with Atlanta when he was in the prime of the year

  • Regarding Freeman

Freeman has been a well below average defensive 1B by the fielding metrics for two years now. Plays a position where you need offense and he posted a sub .800 OPS. He is about as average as you can be. I can't find stats for 2012 but in 2011 the average 1B hit .271/.345/.451 w/ 24 Hrs 91 RBIs and 79 runs. Freeman was .259/.340/.456 with 23 Hrs 94 RBIs and 91 runs. He was 18th in War as far as 1B goes. He was 14th in HRs, 27th in On base% and 29th in slugging% out of eligible 1B.

Compare that to Uggla and his 2B peers. I can't find final 2012 stats but at the ASB the average 2B was hitting .255/.317/.381 while Uggla was .220/.348/.384 in a down year. He was 7th in War at 2B, 5th in HRs, 8th in on base and 29th in slugging (down .85 from his career average)

I'm not saying he isn't over paid but when you compare him to other 2B and Freeman to other 1B its not close. Granted Freeman is young and should improve some but Braves fans act like he should be the tier of players behind Pujols, Votto and Fielder

  • As someone who considers themselves a Braves fan I will make the prediction that they will lose a play in game, again. Or they will lose in the divionsal 3-1 or 3-0. Team will be just good enough to give you false hope all year only to be bounced from the playoffs quickly. This will be my prediction for the next couple of decades.

  • Simmons is thought ti be the best defensive ss in baseball. He also had a great rookie year at the plate. The braves have one of the best of in baseball on paper. All three.guys could potentially go 30/30. Dan uggla needs to play better at the plate. Since arriving in Atlanta his offensive #s have dropped acrossed the board. I really like Chris Johnson and like a poster above said i believe the plutonium of him and juan Francisco will be more productive than chipper was the last few years. Freddie freeman is solid defensely and has some pop. I think he will be great by the time he is done. He is only 22 i think. Brian mccan is coming off shoulder surgery so we will see what the braves will get out of him in a contract year. I believe this will be his last year in Atlanta. The starting rotation should have slot of wins with the potential of the offense. If they can manage to go seven innings a night on average watch out because the braves just might have to best bullpen in baseball. I think the braves can win over 100 games this season but we will see the braves tend to disappoint fans with late season slumps. I hope we win the world series. Go braves

I agree wjth every point except one...simmons is our shortstop for at least the next three years unless a. A huge trade deal is offered for him or b. He bats .205 this season.

    Dude is special.

Uggla I think will have better season than what most prob think he will.

  • I love BMac, but unless he turns things around, I think his time in the sun may be over, quality speaking. I realize he plays catcher and that baseball isn't the most athletic sport on the planet, but he's gotten way too out of shape in my opinion. I had the same one about Hanson and Andruw Jones all those years ago. If I'm making millions of dollars because of my athletic ability you'd damn well better believe I'd be in fantastic shape. I don't know what happened to Brian, but I don't see that level of care being taken with his physique. And I think it's really hurting him.

  • Nice to know Dan Uggla still sucks. Hitting 3-21 in the spring and looks like he has for two years now. Need to offload his sorry ass asap and at least get something for him.
