Best Actress: Jennifer Lawrence, Silver Linings Playbook

She can do no wrong in my book. From hair to makeup to wardrobe, she's an awards show dream IMO.

  • I'd love to see Ang Lee win Best Director. Life of Pi was brilliantly orchestrated IMO.

I've heard that it was a good movie as well. Going to have to check it out. There are a couple of movies on that list that I still need to see. I haven't seen Argo, Silver Linings Playbook, Life of Pi, The Master, Les Miserables and never even heard of Beasts of the Southern Wild or Amour.

  • It is unlikely Argo sweeps because Ben Affleck wasn't nominated for Best Director. Those often go hand in hand. In the past 30 years, 25 of the Best Director winners also won Best Picture.

Personally I think Lincoln will be the big winner.

    I have seen:
    Argo
    Lincoln
    Django Unchained
    Zero Dark Thirty

I enjoyed all of them and would be happy with any of them winning Best Picture. I will probably try and see some of the other nominees.

Below are the years that best director also won best picture
2011: Michel Hazanavicius - The Artist
    2010: Tom Hooper - The King's Speech
2009: Kathryn Bigelow - The Hurt Locker
2008: Danny Boyle - Slumdog Millionaire
2007: Ethan & Joel Coen - No Country for Old Men
2006: Martin Scorsese - The Departed
2004: Clint Eastwood - Million Dollar Baby
2003: Peter Jackson - Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
    2001: Ron Howard - A Beautiful Mind
1999: Sam Mendes - American Beauty
    1997: James Cameron - Titanic
1996: Anthony Minghella - The English Patient
    1995: Mel Gibson - Braveheart
1994: Robert Zemeckis - Forrest Gump
    1993: Steven Spielberg - Schindler's List
    1992: Clint Eastwood - Unforgiven
1991: Jonathan Demme - The Silence of the Lambs
1990: Kevin Costner - Dancer with Wolves
1988: Barry Levinson - Rain Man
1987: Bernardo Bertolucci - The Last Emperor
    1986: Oliver Stone - Platoon
1985: Sydney Pollack - Out of Africa
    1984: Milos Forman - Amadeus
1983: James L. Brooks - Terms of Endearment
    1982: Richard Attenborough - Gandhi

Years that it did not match up:
    2005, 2002, 2000, 1998, 1989

  • I have seen 6 of the 9 so far and rank them in order:

    1. Lincoln
    2. Life of Pi
    3. Les Miserables
    4. Argo
    5. Django Unchained
    6. Silver Linings Playbook

Going to see Zero Dark Thirty and Amour for sure. Not sure about Beasts of the Southern Wild.

The movie with the most nominations typically fairs well. I suspect Lincoln takes Picture, Director, Actor, and possibly Supporting Actor - Jones deserves it. I would love to see Lawrence and Hathaway take the Actress categories, ringing in the new generation of actresses, of which they are 2 of the best.

This was a good year for movies.

  • So I've seen them all. My list:

Best Picture: Django. I wouldn't be upset with Argo or Lincoln either.

Best Director: Ang Lee or Speilberg. It's a crime Taratino isn't nominated.

Best Actor: Daniel Day Lewis. Joaquin Phoeniz is also brilliant in The Master

Best Actress: Jennifer Lawrence. She carried this film- Cooper and Deniro are solid but she blew me away.

Best Supporting Actor: Waltz. He's just as good in this as he was in Inglorious Bastards when he won. Jones was really good in Lincoln as well, so was Hoffman in Master.

Best Supporting Actress: Anne Hathaway. Weak year for this award imo. Anne, Sally Fields and Amy Adams were all good, but nothing special. Anne had to sing though so I'll give her the nod.

    Ranking the Best Picture nominees:
I'll do it in three groups so first group: The favorites
    1. Django
    2. Lincoln
    3. Argo
Group 2: Great movies not quite good enough
    4. Silver Linings Playbook
    5. Life of Pi
    6. Amour- could be higher but I don't really care for old people and it's a stacked year.
    7. Beasts of the Southern Wild
    Good but shouldn't be nominated
    8. Les Miserables- A lot of hype, less substance. See the play or read the book, they're far better.
    9. Zero Dark Thirty- I liked it and it was fun to watch but it's not an Oscar worthy movie

Forgot to add, Moonrise Kingdom should be nominated. Brilliant film and much more deserving than Les Miseables and Zero Dark Thirty, and better than Beasts of the Southern Wild imo.
