2013 Starters

  • Your WAY too early lineup for 2013

QB:Wittek- looked good against ND, looked like crap against GTech, who knews if he will be good or bad
RB:Silas Redd- should run for 1000
    FB:Jaheel Pinner
WR:Agholor,Lee - best duo in country
TE:Grimble/Telfer- both beasts but we need to use em more
    LT:Aundrey Walker- scares me
LG:Max Tuerk- maybe our best Oline
    C:Marcus Martin
    RG:Jon Martinez
    RT:Kevin Graf
    DE:Morgan Breslin- GREAT pass rusher
DT:Leonard Williams- proably the best DT in country next year
    NT:George Uko
    DE:Devon Kennard
    SLB:Anthony Sarao
    MLB:Lamar Dawson
    WLB:Hayes Pullard
    CB:Nickell Robey,Kevon Seymour
FS:Dion Bailey- should be best in PAC12
    SS:Demetrius Wright

Its like an, 8-4 team I would say.

Sorry I must have misread this. I think you meant to 2nd best duo in the country (if even that).

  • QB-Mettenberger-needs to show me something before I'm a believer. Has the talent
    RB-Alfred Blue/Jeremy Hill/Kenny Hilliard pick one
FB-JC Copeland-best blocking FB in the country
WR-Odell Beckham/Jarvis Landry-talented duo but Beckham had a tough year and what good are they if they can't get the ball
TE-Desean Smith-immediately becomes the best receiving option when he sets foot on campus
LT-Lael Collins-Faulk leaving hurts so Collins gets to see if he can live up to his billing
    LG-Josh Williford-lots of experience
    C-Elliot Porter-we'll see
    RG-Trai Turner-was good as a freshman
RT-Vadal Alexander-solid as a freshman but got roasted by Goodman for Clemson

DE-Danielle Hunter-freakish talent and the next stud DE at LSU
    DE-Jermauria Rasco-another stud
DT-Anthony Johnson-if the light comes on fully, he'll be the best DT in the country
DT-Ego Ferguson-time to start fulfilling all that talent
OLB-Tahj Jones-returns from academic suspension; fast
OLB-Kwon Alexander-could be others but he was the best as a freshman and is the best talent
MLB-Lamin Barrow-solid player but not sure he can man the middle
CB-Jalen Collins-talented but inconsistent this year
CB-Jalen Mills-good year as a freshman. Could be elite in time
SS-Craig Loston-solid this year and could be very good next year
FS-Corey Thompson-most will say Ronald Martin but Thompson is the better talent

    K-James Hairston-we'll see
P-Jaime Keehn-the next brash Australian stud punter

    PR-Odell Beckham-he's good at this
    KR-Jeryl Brazil-elite speed
KR-Tredavious White-as seen in the Army game, he's electric

Observations: omg at WR (9 4/5 stars battling for PT, and there's more unlisted). 5 new starters, and it's really 4 because Yeldon should not count considering his reps.

    Defense:

    LB Mosley
    LB Depriest
    LB Dickson
    CB Smith

Did defense quick, got lazy. Counting 5 new starters here as well. Most with noteworthy amounts of experience.. There are many more notables/contributors/possible starters

  • Going to make a couple.. bold-ish predictions on who wins the job in a few slots.

    Offense:

    QB- AJ
    RB- TJ Yeldon
    H-back- Jalston Fowler/Derrick Henry
TE- OJ Howard, Brian Vogler/Malcolm Faciane... Vogler/Faciane will almost certainly be in to block, really think OJ is our top guy with him coming in early, though.

    WR- Amari Cooper
WR- DeAndrew White... if Foster makes it in, I could see he and Bell/Shinn playing essentially starting roles.
    Slot- Chris Black/Chris Jones
    LT- Cyrus Kouandjio
LG- Anthony Steen or Alphonse Taylor
    C- Ryan Kelly
RG- Anthony Steen or Arie Kouandjio
    RT- Leon Brown

    Defense:

    DE- Jeff Pagan
    NT- Brandon Ivory/Darren Lake
DE- Ed Stinson (L. Fanning could compete for either DE spot if he isn't in the doghouse)
Jack- Denzel Devall, Xzavier Dickson... think Devall wins the job here.
    LB- CJ Mosley
LB- Trey Depriest, Reggie Ragland... Ragland will see plenty of reps next year, this spot should be interesting.
    Sam- Adrian Hubbard
    CB- Geno Smith
CB- Deion Belue... could see a true frosh (Ardarius Stewart or Maurice Smith most likely) pushing here, but doubtful.

    S- HaHa Clinton-Dix
    S- Landon Collins/Jarrick Williams

    ST:

    K- Adam Griffith
    P- Cody Mandell

    OFFENSE:
QB: Connor Shaw - SR - He might not finish the season as the starter but he will start his final season as QB1
RB: Brandon Wilds - RSo - Proved as a freshman that he can handle starting in the SEC. He had 3 100+ yd games after Latt went down. It was a luxury to Redshirt him in 2012.
TE: Rory Anderson - Jr - Half of this dudes catches have been for touchdowns and most of the others have been big gains or come in the clutch. Jerrell Adams could unseat him by years end though.
WR; Ace Sanders - Sr - Capped his junior season with a 9 catch/2 TD game at the Outback Bowl. He is small but he can make plays.
WR: Bruce Ellington - Jr - Returning leading receiver. Might choose to stick with basketball but I think his success this season will bring him back for another year of football.
WR: Kwinton Smith - RFr - Redshirtted because he wasnt strong/physical enough for SEC defenses coming out of high school. Coaches considered removing the redshirt towards the end of the year but decided against it.
OT: Corey Robinson - RJr - Always had the size and talent but didnt have the confidence/work ethic until this past season. Looked good at times but was obviously a first year starter. Should be much more poised next year.
OG: AJ Cann - RJr - Has started every game since the beginning of his RFr season. Very solid interior lineman.
OC: Cody Waldrop - RFr - Kyle Harris was supposed to be our next Center in line but Waldrop passed him on the depth chart heading into spring. Harris transferred.
OG: Brock Stadnik - RFr - Ronald Patrick was the weak link in the line this year and I think after redshirtting and going through 2 springs Stadnik should be ready to step in and play.
OT: Brandon Shell - RSo - Was supposed to be our LT of the future but ended up being better suited for the right side. If he progresses more than Robinson he might switch to LT. That also depends on where Mike Matulis is coming off of another shoulder injury.

    DEFENSE:

DE: Chaz Sutton - RSr - Chaz has been waiting patiently to become a starter the entire time he has been here. That time has come. He made some big plays for us this year and will break out in 2013.
DT: JT Surratt - RJr - Similar to Corey Robinson on the OL, Surratt wasnt mentally ready his first 2 years in the program. This year he stepped in and made some plays. Our DL Coach believes that, when focused, he is our most physically talented DT (above Kelcy Quarles).
DT: Kelcy Quarles - Jr - Earned his starting role by the end of his Fr season and has not let go.
DE: Jadeveon Clowney - No explaination needed.
WLB: Larenz Bryant - Fr - We only have 2 healthy scholarship LBs heading into spring practice. This was supposed to be Cedrick Cooper's job but he tore his ACL during bowl prep. I doubt he is back 100% before the first game and Larenz is too talented to keep off the field.
MLB: Kaiwan Lewis - So - Lewis didnt get to play much at LB as a freshman but our coaches felt his play on special teams warranted burning his redshirt. He also wins this spot by default considering we dont have any other MLBs on scholarship right now.
SPUR: Jordan Diggs - RFr - Another case of the mystery injury. Diggs played the first few games of the year and looked pretty good. But Devonte Holloman was playing so well that we were conveniently able to redshirt Diggs. None of the other spurs are quite as talented as he is.
CB: Victor Hampton - RJr - He made some mistakes but is a great cover corner. He made some huge plays for us and will surely make more next year before heading to the NFL.
SS: Brison Williams - Jr - Solid 2 year contributor, 1 year starter. Won't be All-SEC but can make some plays.
FS: TJ Gurley - So - He earned playing time as a freshman and made some big plays. Halfway through the season he tore his ACL and was put on the shelf. Our coaches hope to get him back by the start of fall camp. If he isnt ready look for RFr Chaz Elder to move over from CB as FS is his more natural position.
CB: Jimmy Legree - RSr - Legree looked great the first few games of the year but started to fade down the stretch. The talent is there, he just has to maintain his confidence throughout the season.

KR: Bruce Ellington - Jr - Has gotten close but always seems to get caught up by the last man. He'll finally return one for a TD in 2013.
PR: Ace Sanders - Sr - Solidified himself as one of the best punt returners in the country with a 63 yard return for TD in the Outback Bowl.

Henry will definitely start out at RB, hard to say whether or not he will have that type of impact as a frosh, but with him being an EE I fully expect him to contribute one way or another next year.

Lacy is gone, and as far as Brown goes... who knows. Our staff is apparently very high on him and we've heard he moves absurdly well for a guy his size. Saban usually doesn't miss on the JUCO guys, so we'll see.

  • QB - Tyler Ferguson. This will be a competition and the toughest to project, as we got a JUCO QB in Ferguson and a true sophomore in Steven Bench. I like Bench, but I think Ferguson barely beats him out.

RB - Zach Zwinak/Akeel Lynch. I believe Zwinak starts the year and Lynch finishes as the starter. Lynch supposedly impressed quite a bit during summer camp last year, but was redshirted. Rumor was that staff promised him a RS so he could play in a bowl game (2016, when bowl ban is over).

    WR - Allen Robinson. Stud.

WR - Brandon Moseby-Felder. We've got more talented guys behind him, but he came on strong at the end of last season and is an experienced guy at the position. Top slot WR will be Alex Kenney or Malik Golden.

TE - Garry Gilliam. Returning starter from last year, big blocking type. Whoever starts is not a big deal, though, as we've got 4-5 TE's who will get significant playing time.

    TE - Kyle Carter. Stud.

OT - Donovan Smith. Good player, just getting his feet wet last year. Has high potential but still some things he needs to work on to become great.

OG - Miles Dieffenbach. Starter most of the way last year, didn't play terrific down the stretch. Ty Howle replaced him and they'll probably fight for the spot this year.

OC - Angelo Mangiro. Not sure about this one - I personally think Dieffenbach and Howle are both more natural OC's, but Mangiro might fit well here. Mauling kind of kid, excited to see him become a full-time starter.

OG - John Urschel. Pretty good OG, will be senior.

OT - Adam Gress. Good heavens, we need someone to step up here. Gress was a turnstile this past year, but we have no one at the position. Other possibilities are Nate Cadogan, Eric Shrive.

RDE - Deion Barnes. Kid really showed well as a pass rusher this past year. Will be a RS Sophomore in 2013.

DT - DaQuan Jones. Wasn't as good as I had hoped in 2012, will hopefully put it all together his senior year. Same position as Jared Odrick and Devon Still (and similar body types - tall, lanky, long arms).

DT - Kyle Baublitz. Will be tough replacing Jordan Hill. We don't have much depth at DT. Austin Johnson should be next guy in, though Anthony Zettel should play inside during pass rushing situations.

RDE - CJ Olaniyan. Think he did decently this past year, he and Zettel will most likely fight for this starting spot.

OLB - Nyeem Wartman. Kid is very athletic, had an injury as a true freshman this past year, will probably earn a RS for 2012. Needs experience. Ben Kline should be the backup.

MLB - Glenn Carson. Need this guy to solidify the LB unit after losing Hodges and Mauti. Kid's tough and underrated. Loves playing the run game, more of an old-school thumping MLB.

OLB - Mike Hull. Needs to put on weight, but played really well as our "nickel" LB last year. Should be a three down player, has good instincts and hopefully developing into yet another great LB for PSU.

CB - Adrian Amos. The stud of the secondary.

CB - DaQuan Davis. Really thin at CB after Amos, and I think Davis steps up to claim the starting spot. True sophomore, got some experience in 2012. Had some ups and downs (more of the latter than former, but wasn't horrible as a freshman).

S - Stephen Obeng-Agyapong. Has speed and was solid, if unspectacular last season.

S - Malcolm Willis. More of the strong safety, also solid.

I also think Eugene Lewis will play some on the edge behind BMF, and will see significant time in the slot.

I think it's going to be hard to keep Lewis off the field by the end of the year. He probably has the most natural talent on the offense.

Several positions I was torn about. Sometimes kids split time so much that naming a starter is really unnecessary. Zettel/Olaniyan will both see plenty of time and Zettel might win the starting spot.

Lewis is a kid I'm excited about, but not sure he's ready to be a starter...quite yet. I actually considered Trevor Williams before Lewis.
