2014 LB Michael Ferns commits to Michigan

Very strange. You guys have had great LBs for most of the past decade or longer. Every school loses a hometown player here and there, but you guys have struggled more than usual lately IMO. It is a little like us whiffing on RBs and WRs the past 2-3 years, but we have the RR debacle to blame.

I think it has to do with the fact that we've gone from running a 4-3 to most of the time 4-2-5. 3/4 of the time we only have two LB's on the field.

Trust me I don't like it one bit, If we didn't land Ryan Shazier and Curtis Grant we would be in real trouble IMO.

He named us his leader, although its really hard to get a read on the kid. He isnt a big fan of the recruiting process. His Father played at AU and It wouldn't surprise me one bit if he end up down south. The only solid news I have heard on him that I trust is from someone in Raekon McMillian camp who said he wouldn't be surprised if Booker was the first member of the 2014 class. Again that's all speculation but he is one of the few guys on Bucknuts I trust when it comes to insider info with this kid. I would put it at about 55/45 that he ends up at OSU.

Ohh he's the kid with the AU connection, I knew there was one like that. With him, McMillian, and Garrett looking like good options for you, that'd be a terrifying LB class.

That's a good point. Is that Fickell or Withers who does that? Or Meyer?

Credit for this goes to EF_Wolverine,

"Since June 10, 2011, Hoke has landed eight Ohio kids with Ohio State offers (Strobel, Kalis, Wormley, Thomas, McCray, Smith, Gedeon, Ferns). In the TEN (!!!) classes from 2002-2011, Michigan landed SEVEN Ohio kids with OSU offers (Crable, Burgess, Mike Massey, Manningham, Boren, Koger, Turner). That's....mind-boggling."

Wow. And FWIW nearly all of those are defensive players, so it's not a result of OSU's move to a spread offense. Something else is going on.

The other guy I thought you had locked up was Jaylon Smith. Very surprised he sort of suddenly swung over to ND.

Trust me we are excited, Long way to go though. These kids all want to play together so on the outside that looks good, but the pessimist in me also looks at it like we could end up with none of them if another team makes a big push. Dawgs BAMA etc.

UMMMM, I can see how you could think that but the last 4/5 months before he committed it became pretty clear ND was the team to beat. His brothers situation at OSU made it tough to start with and then he just fell in love with NDs 99% graduation rate for African American football players.

Booker is an OSU lean though, right?

Bill Greene talked to Booker the other day and think's he's all Buckeye FWIW. Congrats on Ferns he's a great player.

  • Sucks.

Kid would have been a solid back-up in Cbus. Depth is important when playing quality B1G teams like MSU or Wisconsin.

I actually really don't think it is, OSU fans are going to have to get used to UM getting a good amount of players from Ohio each year IMO. Its hard to keep that fence up when you keep giving love to kids that live 2,000 miles away.

I think Urbie's reduced Ohio focus is part of it, but I also think Hoke and Mattison have brought a new intensity to recruiting that was lacking toward the end of the Carr years. It also helps that Hoke is an Ohio boy and that he walked into the UM job with plenty of Midwest recruiting relationships from his time at Ball State.

Sorry I should have added that as well, Its not just BC Urban is going more national. UM is doing a great job in Ohio.

Hoke is a very different coach, I could see how some recruits would prefer his style over Urban's.

As long as UM stays competitive I see them doing very well in Ohio.

OSU has been doing that the last 3/4 years. We call it the Star position usually gets more snaps a game than the SAM unless we are playing a team like Wisky etc.

couple of questions for the UM guys

    1. whats your scholarship count?

    2. do you have room for Treadwell and Green?

    3. Whats the backup plan if you dont get them? Bank the scholarships for 14?

    Thanks

    Huburt

  • Non troll post, but looking for clarification from Buckeye kids, I heardTrey Depriest wanted to go to Michigan but the whole RR experiment had him choosing ~ OSU and Bama? Is that even close to accurate? Also, wasn't their rumors that he was going to xfer to OSU or was that BN subscription pull tactics?

I think he was Bama all the way with OSU in second.

That was all wishful thinking from OSU fans. I dont think it had any legs to it at all. He should be getting some solid playing time if not starting for BAMA next year.
