2014 LB Michael Ferns commits to Michigan

  • I was looking for an answer from a UM fan that actually knows what they are talking about.

Not a guy who thinks OSU only has a chance at one more 4/5 star kid this class and thinks we are going to close with all 2/3 stars.

  • Believe we have 2 spots left possibly 3 depending on Frank clark debacle.

Michigan has two spots left, that is the max right now. Laquon Treadwell's spot is saved and Derrick Green/Leon McQuay have a spot. If they choose to go elsewhere they won't push for a less talented player and bank the schollies.

Pretty sure the McQuay ship has sailed. However, Priest Willis is scheduled for an official visit.

Also, if they don't land Treadwell I have read a few recent rumblings that there is a kid who moved to Michigan over the summer that the staff has their eyes on. I can't recall his name, but I think he is going to get a closer look after the first few games this fall.

couple of questions for the UM guys

    1. whats your scholarship count?

    2. do you have room for Treadwell and Green?

    3. Whats the backup plan if you dont get them? Bank the scholarships for 14?

    Thanks

    1. We have 77 players currently on scholarship, 13 of whom are seniors. 77-13=64, which means we currently can take 21 in the 2013 class if every RS JR is extended. We have 10 RS JRs, two of whom (Lewan and Toussaint) potentially could leave early for the NFL. We also have at least two more who might not be extended. And we have one player in legal trouble who might or might not have played his last game in a winged helmet depending on how that plays out. If you assume Toussaint leaves early, two other RS JRs are not extended and one other player is lost through normal attrition, you get to a 2013 class size of 25 (21+1+2+1=25).

    2. We currently have 23 commits for 2013. That leaves room for both Treadwell and Green in a class of 25.

    3. I think we will land Treadwell, but not so sure about Green. If we whiff on Green, I do not think we will automatically bank the scholarship for 2014. I think we would consider another RB, DL or DB depending on who is available. Also, we had a couple of late decommits last year. I don't know of anyone who is wavering, but it's a long way to NSD. It would not surprise me at all to see at least one name on our current list of commits not end up in the class.

Not so sure about McQuay, he just moved Michigan out of his top 3, the coaches are still recruiting him. I don't think it matters with Treadwell, would be extremely surprised if he doesn't choose Michigan.

Agreed. Who are your main targets at LB?

Top secret stuff can't tell you. We already have one committed though..

He named us his leader, although its really hard to get a read on the kid. He isnt a big fan of the recruiting process. His Father played at AU and It wouldn't surprise me one bit if he end up down south. The only solid news I have heard on him that I trust is from someone in Raekon McMillian camp who said he wouldn't be surprised if Booker was the first member of the 2014 class. Again that's all speculation but he is one of the few guys on Bucknuts I trust when it comes to insider info with this kid. I would put it at about 55/45 that he ends up at OSU.

You should have no worries I think your 2014 LB haul is going to be insane. Of course no one as good as Smith but 2 or 3 just a notch below. How many LB's do you think you'll take next year and how many scholarships would you guess OSU will have? We're sitting at 76 scholarship players on our team right now. Hoping we pocket 5 for the 2014 class which is best I've seen in a long time..

OSU has been doing that the last 3/4 years. We call it the Star position usually gets more snaps a game than the SAM unless we are playing a team like Wisky etc.

Exact same thing we call it, copycats!

LSU site is pretty confident they get Willis. Found this interesting though Willis will get to see UM twice without visiting when he visits ND and Nebraska. If UM looks good that can't hurt..

Why would any receiver want to go to LSU?

I'm not counting on Willis in the least bit. Just pointing out the other options out there.

I actually could see a scenario where Michigan lands Willis and Green and moves Jourdan Lewis to WR to help offset the loss of Treadwell.

LSU has no problems landing elite receivers. Bowe, Doucet, Tolliver, kid they had last year, Landry just to name a few. Believe all those kids beside Bowe were considered top WR in the country coming out of HS. Mett is going to have a huge year passing, IMO. They aren't hurting for WR's, heck they are huge leaders for two of the best in 2014..

I know, but doesn't answer why an elite WR would want to go there, they have an extremely poor passing game.

Can't answer that all that I know is they do like going there. They all get drafted high in the NFL so doesn't really hurt them there.

Only time will tell, It has a chance to be great but the key word is chance. I think we take 23-25 for 2014 to answer your question. That depends on if Roby a CB and Hankins a DT leave early for the draft. I think they will but who knows.

If you don't mind my asking, what's the schollie situation like at OSU? Are you guys still at an 82 cap next year? I feel bad because I actually just flat out have no idea what your scholarship numbers look like.

  • I think Ferns would be better on offense, not saying he wouldn't be a good college LB, but just a higher ceiling at TE or H-Back.

We are at 82 next year, and honestly our schollie situation is likely to shift. People who see themselves not where they want to be with the new staff may be leaving. Off the top of my head, we have room for 17 in this class without accounting for attrition.

Non troll post, but looking for clarification from Buckeye kids, I heardTrey Depriest wanted to go to Michigan but the whole RR experiment had him choosing ~ OSU and Bama? Is that even close to accurate? Also, wasn't their rumors that he was going to xfer to OSU or was that BN subscription pull tactics?

Springfield kids grow up despising Michigan, so that was never an option. Hicks was all Texas. His mom and his coach all relocated there. Trey chose Bama because they showed him " love" and I guess we didn't. Good kid tho. His spot went to Curtis Grant - highest rated Backer in the country. We also took Ryan Shazier who will be better than all 3 IMO, and so far he has proven that on the field. Last year when Josh Perry committed he was the #1 LB in Ohio. I realize things change. Missing out on Bolden & McCray were circumstances of space at a specific time. We also missed on Chris Borland (wisky). You could argue LB depth in Ohio is a good problem to have. We still have the Greatest Shot in this state. And if you think about it, some of the best Backers are less rated guys.

    Good luck to Ferns!!!!
