***2014 Rivals Watch list vs. 2014 Top247***

  • I went through the Rivals list just now and compared it to who we have ranked here at 247Sports and came up with the following notes.

-Of the 250 prospects on that list, 89.6 percent of them (224) have initial ratings from 247Sports already. The only one I see that we don't have rated right now who will make a significant jump when we update 2014 is Ohio athlete Marshon Lattimore from Glenville and we've discussed him here on this board.

-Of the 10 five stars Rivals released, nine of them were given an initial five-star rating by 247Sports on May 3, 2012, when we released our 2014 Top 25

I guess that means that even though they felt the need to wait, that they must agree with us on a lot of players. As I've said many times, we are not out here beating our chest on rankings. We have one of the most experienced staffs in the business and we know what we are doing, but I would never put those other guys down about the choices they make. Every call on every player will be judged in time and we all will have our hits and misses.

I have bolded the players that we do not have ranked that are on the 2014 Rivals250 watch list.

    Best player in Ohio?

    PsychG118453

  • Great post JC. Couple of quick points:

-Nick Chubb is a hard RB to evaluate IMO as I don't think he's elite at anything (ie. size, speed, agility, power) and he plays in mid-level Georgia Competition at 4A Cedartown while the largest class is 6A. Be interested in seeing what 247 gives him as he is "super" productive on the football field.

-Braxton Berrios. Rivals has him as a 4 Star and 247Sports has him as a 3 star, 89 grade. Last night I watched film of Cyrus Jones (96 rating from 247) during his senior season and Berrios from this 2012 season, his junior season. Berrios plays in North Carolina's largest class and he's led Leesville Rd to 12-0 records in both 2011 and 2012. In 2011, they lost in Round 3 to 12-0 Garner. The same 2 teams, both 12-0, meet again in Round 3 on Friday.

    After 12 games Berrios has:
-1146 rushing yards on 136 carries, 22 rushing TDs
~600 receiving yards on 28 catches, 7 receiving TDs
-Scored 2 or more TDs in 11 of 12 games
-Also starts on defense and had 1 INT and 1 fumble recovery in their 37-30 Round 2 win
-Won the Charlotte 2012 Sparq Championship (out 1,300 participants) with a score 17 points higher than the 2nd place finisher.
-Charlotte Sparq include a 39.5 inch vertical, 3.90 shuttle and a 4.60 in the 40 on a slow surface as Age Group & National Champ in the 100m & 200m dashes, Bryce Love (who ran 10.6x FAT as a 14 year old 9th grader this past Spring) only ran 4.66 at the event.

My question is how is Cyrus (whom I love and wish was getting more PT/touches as I think he's electric) a 96 and Berrios an 89. Berrios looks every bit as explosive, shifty as an 11th grader as did Cyrus as a 12th grader.

I don't know his actual Rivals score other than 4 star...... but thus kid is at minimum a low 4 star.....personally, I think he's even higher.

I saw some video of the 1 on 1 with WRs vs DBs at the Charlotte SPARQ. Berrios was "doing" everybody. Had coaches and other participants laughing at how he was embarrassing the DBs. Kid is "nasty".

I think we are going to move Berrios up soon based on this season. He's smaller than Cyrus Jones was coming out, though and doesn't quite have the ceiling. We also were projecting Jones at cornerback at the time.

Thanks for the feedback. Cyrus is 5'10", 192 now. Was probably 180-185 last year as a senior. I'm not sure Berrios is his listed 5'10" but he should be 180-185 by this time next season as a 12th grader.

I saw Chubb play Vonn Bell's team. When he was fresh, he was impressive- very powerful back, good vision and enough speed to run away from defenders when they did not take good angles. He tired out as the game went on and Bell lit him up once or twice (which I thought said something about Bell and his toughness). I would say he will probably start in the 89-90 range and may move up as we compare him to other backs around the country.

  • A. Lot of kids from sc on that list. Do south Carolina have a great chance at finishing in the top five next year recruiting ranking. Do south Carolina lead for berrios at this time.

I am not sure about top five. It is a much better year in state than 2012 or 2013.

Yes on Berrios at this time. If Ohio State gets after him, though, I think the Buckeyes will be a huge factor.

Is there a reason Justin Brent isn't in bold lettering? What's 247 scouting report on him with Brent being listed as 3*?

  • Because we have him ranked. Speed is the main reason he's not a four star.

  • Gyasi Akem and Otaro Alaka actually have been ranked by us. Both are ranked 89 at the moment. Akem was ranked on Oct. 16. Alaka was rated on Aug. 20.

I fixed it for him. Tried to fix on mobile last night, but couldn't. It's not so bad on the laptop, but brutal if you are on iPhone.

It's all good, though, like you said he's new.

    Appreciate the question, 1080!
