Dave Biddle will also run a thread on Bucknuts here:
Northwestern's Pat Fitzgerald is first up at the dais.
"Football season is here."
NU coming off bowl win
"That gives us great confidence that hopefully we can take the next step."
Fitzgerald had hip surgery, said he was cleared 2 weeks ago and will be ready for camp
"I'm questionable as an athlete ... but I'll be ready to go."
Fitz talking about tough schedule opening at Cal and back home with Syracuse.
Says his OL is healthy "There will be great competition in that room."
"Discipline begins in recruiting with the identification of a prospect who fits your program."
Said it begins in recruiting process, says NW is usually a day or week late in offering to vet the prospect
"We will use every means necessary."
"We're not satisfied with just going to bowl games now ... we raised the bar a year ago ... at the end of the day the expectation is to win championships ... we want to put that trophy in our case."
Fitz talking about the new rules on targeting hits with the helmet.
"There is no question the health and safety of our student-athletes is the number one priority."
Fitz on OSU night game:
"The pageantry of Big Ten football is special ... you take it down to individual games, the opportunity to compete and play Big Ten football is exciting ... quite frankly, I haven't put a lot of thought on it."
Says worried about assembling team now
"The last time we played each other at night it was a unique environment at our place and it was a successful game for us."
Also reminisces about enjoying that win with Coach Walker
"They are an unbeaten team from last year and it is special for them to come in and be our Big Ten opener."
Darrell Hazell new coach at Purdue up now.
"One of the first things I said to our team was Purdue is always a team perceived in the middle. I told them it will take a lot of work but we will climb out of the middle and put Purdue into national prominence for a long amount of time."
Hazell reflects on working with Jim Tressel for 7 years, cites how he remained calm when bullets flying on sideline.
"Spent 7 years at Ohio State and coach Tressel was a big influence on me and how I do things today."

"It all starts with our self image and how we see ourselves. If we don't see ourselves as a champion, nobody else will see us as a champion."
Hazell says he wants Purdue to be a tougher team and play with more discipline
"I'm fortunate I was in this conference for 7 years ... the preparation that goes in and getting your A players to the games each week, then you have a chance. Then you have to make a play."
Hazell asked about QB situation
"We have a nice QB battle going on with a senior Rob Henry and a true freshman Danny Etling who came in early ... we will give them equal reps ... In about 2 weeks after we start practice we will make a decision."
Wisconsin's Gary Andersen up now
says they have built trust between players and coaches
"There was a lot of success (at UW). For us it's about establishing our core values. We expect the kids to succeed socially, academically and athletically."
"We walked into a program that was not broke."
"It's a 3-man battle right now. ... Curt and Joel came out on top in the spring. It is a unique situation. Tanner will also compete (JUCO transfer). He deserves that opportunity. ... No timeline on it. We may jog out for the first play of the season with 2 QBs on the field."
Says Borland could be best LB in the country.
Video of Coach Hazell at podium:
Andersen on Urban Meyer and working with him
"Coach has been very good to me. I have a lot of respect for how he carries himself ... it was great for me we were 12-0 and won a BCS bowl , there weren't a lot of confrontations."
"It's great to compete against your friends ... that's going to be a big game."
says meyer is a great person and family man.
Andersen asked about Meyer and discipline
"I have no idea how Coach Meyer handled the situation ... I know he is going to be fair. The tricky thing nowadays is finding out exactly what happened ... and help the young man and get the facts straight."
"We're father figures ... I've raised 3 boys of my own, they are far from perfect ... you educate them and hope they grow as men."
I will have Andersen video shortly, we are in a break Tim Beckman next at top of the hour
