***247Sports Rankings Notes***

  • 247Sports will release its final Top247 for the Class of 2013 in the coming days and I wanted to take the time to point out some specifics in our philosophy for the final rankings.

1- We will have 32 five star prospects. There are 32 first round picks in the NFL Draft and because we project to the highest upside, that number makes sense to us.

2- The position representation within those 32 will fit with NFL Draft data during the past 3-5 years. For example, there will likely be more defensive ends, offensive tackles, defensive tackles, quarterbacks and cornerbacks than safeties, centers, guards, inside linebackers and other spots. I will say that some outside linebackers that are elite pass rusher types and great athletes will be valued like defensive ends. This is due to the 3-4 defenses, etc.

3- We are not concerned with where we had a prospect ranked previously. After the final Top247 is released, there is no turning back. Our goal is to get it right in the end. If a prospect has to go from three stars to No. 2 in the country, hey we missed it up until this point.

4- We are not concerned with where any other recruiting media outlet has a prospect ranked, what they reported from an event, what their stance is on a player, who they like, etc. In football evaluation, you are going to have differences of opinion. Talk to 10 different pro scouts and 10 different college coaches and they are going to say different things. We respect where other networks have prospects ranked, which is why we have the 247Composite. Keep in mind that 247Composite rankings and ratings are what we use exclusively to calculate our team rankings formula.

5- We understand that fans are fans and you all want your commits to be ranked high. We also understand you have opinions about players and want you to express it. That being said, we would not be doing our jobs if we pandered to you if you whine, post things like “what a joke”, act like we are being bullies to a high school kid, etc. It’s our job to do this and you wouldn’t have very much fun here if we didn’t have rankings. That being said, we appreciate that what we do stirs so much passion.

Thanks! One of our guys has the flu, so we are trying to nail down the day of the release.

Lebron James will never be as good as Michael Jordan, thus we should get rid of his nickname, "The King".

  • Could you expand more on the composite ranking. Which sites rankings are included, weight of each if any and does the entire class count towards the score? Maybe there is a thread already, would appreciate the link. Thanks!

  • We all really like the adjustments we continue to make as a team with a vision for the future.

To be clear, doesn't mean there will be 32 five-star prospects the entire way through a cycle. The end game will be 32, however.

  • JC not so sure how I feel about the set 32 5 stars, or the positional representation.

There are almost never 32 prospects with 1st round grades in the eyes of NFL scouts. It dillutes the meaning of being a 5 star IMO.

Either way, looking forward to seeing the final rankings. Keep up the good work.

  • I love #3. Nothing worse than doubling-down on your mistakes, and nothing better than being willing to say you had it wrong before but are correcting it.

    I agree with this position.

It doesn't make sense to have a set number of five stars as different years (classes) will have different levels of talent.

Just because there has to be 32 players chosen in the first round doesn't mean that every single year all 32 will be legit first round talent.

Yep, and it's a process with guys developing at different times, light comes on, see more prospects and more of prospects, etc...

Sure. We don't disclose which networks exactly, but you could probably guess the others and be accurate.

Their prospect rankings and ratings are equally weighed (Network A 25 percent, Network B 25 percent, Network C 25 percent, 247Sports 25 percent- assuming there are four) and a 247Composite rating and ranking is determined using our formula. Those numbers are then fed into our class rank formula, a score is produced and the teams are ranked in order.

Not only that, but classes vary. Some are top heavy. Some are lighter at the top but with more depth. It seems random and forced to automatically give out a fixed number of five stars (or four or three or two, for that matter) every year. Why not just evaluate the players on their merits and if it turns out there are 35 (or only 30) players deserving of five stars, so be it?

  • IMO the final rankings should be pretty easy, bump all Buckeyes up for solid decision making skills and conversely drop all UM recruits for poor decision making skills.

Every yr you will have a set quota to reach by the end for 5*'s? Is so, that's retarded

Agree. As the other poster said, some classes will have less than 32 legit 5* kids and some will have 40+. To me a 5* is a 5* based on talent and you know it when you see it not based on a set number of slots. This has been the major criticism of Scout's ranking system for years. They have 50 5* kids every year and 300 4* and every other kid is a 3*. Just my opinion but I think a kid should be whatever * based on his talent not on his numerical slot in the rankings. If there only happen to be 10 5* kids in a class then so be it. To me it's wrong to give a kid a 5th * based on a slot or not give a kid a 5th* based on a slot. Just give them the * they deserve.

Not meant as a huge criticism since I use these rankings soley as a reference and for info gathering and then rate kids on my own eyeballs. I also think 247 does the best job ranking kids. It's just an observational point. Regardless thanks for detailing out the thinking. It's very appreciated.

  • Ok its a philosophy but what are the specific qualities of 5 star players. Is is simply we project player x to be a first round draft pick.

  • Having 32 5*'s because that's the (current) number of NFL franchises is goofy. You wouldn't say that there are 119 "elite" JV players because there are that many D-1 football teams. Trying to project HS players to where they'd fall in the NFL is puzzling to me at best, and skews the data set.

It corrupts the data for comparing 1 years 5 starts to the next IMO.

Next thing you know they will be trying to set the number for the top 247 every year to exactly 247. How crazy is that?

The 32 best players in the country, as judged by 247sports, will be considered the premier, 5 star players. Is this seriously going to impact your life in a hurtful way?
