3-4 vs 4-3

  • I know this has been beaten to death. But I read an article on ESPN a few days ago. Basically said, 3-4 is dying in the NFL. Patriots switched last year and their are only a few teams running a 3-4 base defense. I know Saban loves the defense but will the 3-4 fade away until the NFL picks it back up? I just wonder what recruits think about it. I feel Bama lost a few recruits in years past because of our scheme. What do you guys and gals think?

IMO, LBs love the 3-4 while DEs love the 4-3. Depends on which position has more playmakers.

  • Who knows. Both work equally well with the right players.

  • No. Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Green Bay, Houston, NYJ, Buffalo, Baltimore, Chargers, Cowboys, Browns, Cardinals and Broncos.

There are more, but you have the NFL's best defenses in that group. Patriots defense sucks, they need to do something.

It just played a big part in RN cooling on you. He admitted it himself.

Exactly. The DE position is much "sexier" in the 4-3.

  • Yea the right players make all the difference. If I was a DE I would want 4-3 and vice versa with LBs. Most DEs think they will drop back in coverage in 3-4 and maybe that steers them away from wanting to play in the system.

  • I love the 3-4 defense personally I think the best defenses in the NFL regardless of stats are 3-4 teams such as the Steelers, Ravens, Texans And 49ers. I also think the 3-4 allows for a you to do more things as opposed to the 4-3.

I feel this way too. But sometimes with recruiting having a 3-4 systems hurts you(it seems).

  • But I mean, how different are they really? In our system the Jack LB plays with his hand in the dirt a lot, which basically makes it a 4-3 with a LB playing the role of DE. It's really dependent on the talent you have, whether it's at LB or DE.

At the NFL level the 3-4 is easier to draft for. Undersized DE’s who get turned into OLB's and ILB’s are a dime a dozen every draft.

NT’s and your traditional 5 tech are hard to find but not as hard to find as your traditional 4-3 DE in the mold of a Jared Allen, Julius Pepper’s, Javon Kearse, Mario William’s who usually only come along every couple of Draft’s.

The Patriot’s still run the same 3-4, 4-3 hybrid that Bill B and Nick Saban have always run. The popularity is just dying down a bit now from what it used to be. It’s all cyclical.

True, but then again there is a difference in being a 240- 275 Jack and having RN who is probably going to be around 300 lbs. when he’s fully developed trying to play that position. There are still time’s when you guy’s ask your Jack to drop back in coverage. It might only be 25 to 20 percent of the time but it’s still significant.

Good info. I'm guessing most high schools run a 4-3. Also, I assume from being a fan of Bama 3-4 defenses are more complex than 4-3? Or does it depend on the particular coach his scheme of the 4-3 or 3-4 as to how complex they are?

The article also stated that the 4-3 and 3-4 trends are cyclical.

We run a hybrid 3-4. While our base D is the 3-4, we run a lot of 4 man fronts and are even in the nickel quite a bit

It depends on the coach and his scheme. The 3-4 offer’s a little bit more creativity in blitzes, but some say the 4-3 generates a better pass rush, because the D lineman are not two gapping.

  • LSU and Bama are perfect examples.

We have beast DL guys which makes our 4-3 go and Bama has beast LBers which makes their 3-4 go.

2 best D's in the country last year.. Different schemes.

The common dominator.. Talent and players that fit each respective scheme.

Exactly. We've had one of our DE's at any given time be notable (e.g., Dareus) but rarely are both, since a guy like Upshaw plays the Jack position. LSU, on the other hand, gets recognition for both their DEs.

  • Referring back to the OP, Belichik has always molded his formations and style of play to his personnel.

Last year the 4-3 fit that. You'll still continue to see him run a 3-4 and to think the 3-4 is dying is foolish
