  • I agree with most of what has been said here. Baseball players are a different breed because the majority of even the highest skilled superstar type prospects spend a few years in the minors making next to nothing. It's different than basketball and football when you turn pro and get tons of money thrown your way. Baseball players have to earn it. Even when some are putting up good numbers their first few years they might only be making a few hundred thousand compared to 8 million for the football and basketball rookie who hasn't done anything.

Those honestly seem like reasonable statements. I wish our country were in a position where we could discuss these things openly. It just amazes me how people can start to talk race and people automatically throw in the racist card. I guess it shows just how intolerant our society has become. We are so pushed towards being PC that we throw stones at anyone who wants to have honest discussions on issues.

If todays culture is intolerant I would hate to hear how you would classify any time period in US History prior to 1970.

  • Everyone got away from the obvious answer. Most baseball players who are ML material sign out of HS. The ones who go to college usually come out early and never finish their degree.

Baseball is year round. Football gives you 5 months to go back and work on your degree if you are close. You can stay in shape and attend class two hours a day.

Baseball is 6 months (minus post season) and primarily summer.

I just think it's odd fewer have college degrees and fewer seem to go blow all their money.

It's not odd. It's called demographics, but if you want to dance around that then go ahead.

Wrong. Arizona Fall League, Dominican, Venezualan, Puerto Rican, Mexican Winter Leagues, Instructional league, Co-Op Leagues and spring training make it closer to 10-11.

It's not that, it's that many black athletes aren't raised on households that are good with managing money, and unfortunately many blacks period aren't good with money. It's not just them it's the same with any poor demographic. But lets be honest black culture in general is not exactly known for prudence.

    Sad but very true

Alonzo is right here. Not only that but baseball has the most in depth farm systems in all of sports. Even if you are a bum drafted early you will always have an oppurtunity to make a paycheck if your willing to go the minor league grind. There are a poop ton of career minor leaguers across the scope of baseball. For those with race comments, i just can't neccesarily agree. Baseball is just such a huge, diverse entity that blacks are a minority in it and can't really be used to justify the whole poor demographic thing. I'd wager a whole bunch of hispanics have lived in worse condition then african americans. My personal belief is there are more oppurtunities to make a paycheck, albeit meager in the minors, to avoid losing it all. Not to mention i believe veterans in baseball really like to help the kids in all aspects of their life, not just playing ball. So many prima donnas in Basketball and Football its absurd. Baseball is a true team sport inside and outside of the game

Oh, I'm sorry. Did this thread say 4% of minor leaguers and rooks have degrees?

Maybe I wasn't clear enough. The MLB season is 6 months, minus post season, and primarily in the summer.

So the major league guys didn't go through that right out of HS or college?

If you are 5-6 years removed from your last education you are MUCH less likely to go back than if you are 1/2 a year or a year removed.

Also, you have no evidence that baseball players are less likely to go broke to back up your argument. Seems ironic when talking about a lack of education. I have seen first-hand plenty of first or second round white good-ole southern boys blow their signing bonuses on strip clubs/cars/alcohol/drugs.
