A Little Gun History

Not sure how you'd implement it.

Are you telling me assault weapon bans prevent school massacres?

This is my last post. We will agree to disagree.

I doubt any assault weapons ban passes the House, and even if it did, I'd still get mine.

I'm saying it decreases the likelihood. Until these shooters start obtaining guns illegally, then I think the best course of action is a comprehensive approach including reintroducing the Assault Weapons Ban.

All current weapons would be grandfathered into the reintroduction of the Assault Weapons Ban. They'd stil be there for 20 year old kids to ILLEGALLY take from their parents and drive around with them.

The original ban had no impact on violence in America.

Like I said it doesn't matter. You think that shit is passing the House? Again I'd just go buy one on the side if I had to.

Can one you anti-gun people please tell me why you can tell others what we need or don't need

I'm trying to say what you need or don't need. I'm trying to say that what you want/need that is not a valid reason for the government. There are a lot of things that I need/want that the government tells me I can't have. For instance, I may want a beer after a long day and I may need to get home afterwards. It doesn't mean I should or am allowed to drive home to get there.

That was one reason why the Assault Weapons Ban was ineffective because of the grandfather clause that allowed those types of guns and large capacity magazines to stay in effect. There were several other loopholes, as well like only 18 guns were considered semi automatic and a gun was labeled as semi automatic if it had a pistol grip and a bayonet mount, but if it only had the pistol grip, then it might not be.

They would most likely have to grandfather in guns and try to offer some financial incentive for owners to turn in their guns, but even so, it would take a while before any effect would be felt. That doesn't mean we shouldn't try. You may be right, it will be difficult to pass in the House, but there is alot of support for it now, so there may be pressure to do so.

LOL. No one is turning their guns in.

Look, you seem like a really nice person, I just don't think you realize the mentality of many people in America. There are people like me who would die before giving up certain rights/freedoms, and certainly would never turn a weapon in, even for financial incentives.

No amount of violence would ever change my mind, or millions of other people's. Perhaps you would like living in a different country with more liberal views?

You also can't show me evidence that the assault weapons ban reduced violence in the US.

    We are a violent country.

    We are a violent country.

Yes and no on being a violent country. Are we more violent than other developed countries? Yes. Are we more violent than the rest? No, not even close. The problem is that media coverage has increased and caused more panic about all these issues and created a gun culture that was not persistent before the 1950s. But as a whole, we are actually becoming less and less violent as crime has decreased in many major cities.

I live in DC so I think I would know a little bit about gun violence. And they just reported that with their tough gun control regulations, they just recorded the lowest reported homicide rate since the 1960s. There are alot of factors to go into that as well, which is why I am calling for an approach to go after guns, mental health, and safety in public areas.

People won't turn in their guns, I realize this. Which is why any ban is going to take a while for effects to take place. But that shouldn't mean we need to let it expire, but it probably will again if it does pass this time.

    See I disagree.

I think if a ban is reimplemented it will never expire as we are becoming a far left of center country. People like me are becoming a minority.

That is why I pray any ban is killed in the House so I can get my FN FAL. If I didn't have a damn wedding to pay for I'd have one yesterday.

  • How mad would u be if they did ban them and u got arrested in a sting operation trying to buy one on the side.

We're more liberal than 50 years ago, but we're still a fairly conservative country.

I need a semi-automatic handgun for self defense. I carry one around with me everywhere. I prefer not to use revolvers because I can reload my Walther and H&K handguns faster, and they hold more bullets.

    Perfect reason right there.

And don't tell me if these were banned that I wouldn't need them... the criminals would still have them.

    No you don't.

I wouldn't buy from someone I don't know, moron. I have a lot of shooting buddies that would sell me some.

You do not need a gun in public for self defense. The VAST majority of US citizens do not carry guns on them and are fine. I'm sorry that you are scared, but carrying a gun on you is not the answer. If you are this scared now, you sure as hell won't be able to do anything with that gun when a guy jumps you on the street.

  • Did anyone take into account that assult rifles, mostly the AR-15 are commonly used for predator and prairie dog hunting

I do need a gun in public for self defense. We can agree to disagree, and I will of course get my way, as this will never be outlawed.

You certainly can't rely on the police.

And please don;t try to act tough. Being scared has nothing to do with it.

No, you don't. If the VAST MAJORITY of the public doesn't need it, you don't either. You aren't special.

Some people are that scared, especially if they have to work in low income housing places. After Katrina I carried a gun on me every time I worked on a house in the projects of New Orleans. I did it for my safety, my co-workers safety, and for my family

Do, do you want to have laws based on a pre-disaster society in the projects?

  • I am amazed at the "experts" who have hard stances on gun control but still don't even know what an assault rifle actually is. I bet more than half of these people think that the AR in AR15 stands for assault rifle.
