AAU people on tBB?

  • Trying to understand how corrupt AAU basketball is these days. Is it only corrupt for the high powered teams or are most college programs trying to buy influence with the best players and their handlers?

Someone on another board mentioned that certain schools give an illegal extra stipend to the basketball players. Is this common?

The only school I know of that does this is Bama.

This post makes me believe you are new to AAU basketball? I say that because you talk about programs but don't mention the real problems with AAU, the agents (not just the big 3) and shoe companies.

I am honestly interested in how the NCAA can clean up AAU, if it indeed does need cleaning up. People talk about World Wide Wes and recruiting handlers, but what problems can actually be fixed and how?

Since most D-1 players, if not all, play AAU, do you all think there are boosters at "clean" schools like Gonzaga or Butler buying influence with AAU coaches?

IMHO, there are dirty recruiters at every major football program (Bama included), but is basketball recruiting even worse because of AAU? are football 7 on 7 tournament teams footballs new version of AAU squads?

  • Texas was just busted for shady recruiting practices regarding the AAU school of one of their players.

    Status

  • I know for a fact aau is corrupt as hell. A mid 4star player was offered through his aau coach 180k and up to play for different teams. That was after the 20% cut his coach took. You have aau coaches who do nothing else but live in million dollar homes and drive 125k plus cars.

Basketball is far worse than football. Even the bad programs pay players. I know of more than a few situations where players were bought/paid for by programs not in the top 25 at the time or historically.

I've worked with guys who were runners/handlers and did other work for the big three. They told me that you look at any top 100 list any year for high school and over 30% of them have a deal with an agent or agree to have a deal with an agent before enrolling in college. They typically have guys who live close to campus of their big guys and take care of them.

AAU is where a lot of that contact comes from. You'll see more agents/runners at those games often than scouts. Shoe companies come into play because they want the top guys wearing there gear. It's why you have AAU teams sponsored by the companies these days. And I'd say 70% of the top guys on those teams who are sponsored by a shoe company go to a school with a deal with the same company. That's how it used to be. I haven't worked in basketball for 3 years now so it could have changed.

I know Calipari was the best at what he does from talking to these guys. I don't hate on him though because everybody does it, unless you're the rare coach who can land top talent without shady ness and win.

  • Are football 7 on 7 tournaments the new way to play dirty on a large, widespread field in college football?

I don't think so but I've never worked in that sport or that area so can't speak for it. But I don't think it could possibly be near as dirty just because of the difference in number of players. More you pay, more people that know of the dealings. Could be wrong though.

    Fogtown

  • Remember, Football has 85 players, basketball only has 13. Also, one star player can turn your team around where in football, it takes a couple. Football is dirty, but nothing like basketball.
