Alabama ND national titles

  • Interesting breakdown of the tides and irish national titles.

Examining Notre Dame, Alabama national championships claimed - College Football - Andy Staples - SI.com

How many titles do Alabama and Notre Dame really have? The Crimson Tide claim 14 college football national championships; the Fighting Irish claim 11.

  • Funny how he makes no mention of Alabama when discussing the 1966 ND claim. That is the ultimate disputed claim if there has ever been one.

  • We both have more than most, let's leave it at that. The NCAA is pretty lenient in terms of recognizing champions and isn't hesitant to name 2 and 3 winners in the books...yet 'Bama claims 3 titles that even the NCAA won't give them credit for. I like to go by AP 'consensus' polls which eliminates the Rockne era for us but gives Alabama a 9-8 lead which are 1 and 2 in the country...both great programs no doubt.

  • It's college football. They are all mythical.

Any fan that touts their program because of a mythical number is just plain ignorant.

    Oh, hai Gumps.

i agree with the both great programs.

but ncaa recognizes bama for all 14 titles, even the '41 one that most people have the major problem with. link to official ncaa record books below (page 72, top right for the 41 title, all titles by yer and selectors starts on page 70)

even has some for bama listed that bama doesn't claim, like '66, '75, and '77.

not knocking you or anything, just pointing out the fallacy that people think bama claims any and every potential title they can.

having said that, i'm good with the ap/coaches (upi)/ and/or bcs titles only. regardless of how you select them or the actual # for either, it's impressive for both.

    Yep.

Maybe one day Bama will have as many wins as Ohio State.

    Maybe.

You just gave the winners of every given 'championship' in history, the NCAA still limits what they consider a legit championship. You aren't recognized for '34 or '41 and you squeaked into the 1930 books somehow. I think you with 9, ND with 8 and everybody else with less is only fair...by 'bama math if y'all have 14 ND would have claim to 10 more giving us 21.

    Not to sound like a douche, but how does 8 + 10 = 21?

Hahaha. We claim 11, I was just saying it would be a fair compromise to use the AP(post 1936) consensus titles which would give us 8 and 'bama 9.

    SCirish843

  • Decent write up. Shows that ND has some pretty shaky claims as well, most schools do (tho the 1941 claim for bama is insane).

Either way, bama has the most, ND is second and everyone else is distant third.

as a Bammer - i've always thought this was the right thing to do here. 1 and 2 respectively - just like 843 said - more than anyone else...

I personally contest the 41 championship we claim - and honestly, how we claim it, I have no idea.
but, the 66 one - again, i think Bama has a case to claim that one though

    viper_36

  • coach bryant never got over the 1966 team not getting recognized as the national champions. he said it was his greatest team. coming off 2 straight national championships, notre dame and mich. st. tying, and us beating the hell out of nebraska in the sugar bowl (while notre dame stayed home) IT DOESN'T SEEM QUITE FAIR! we also started out number 1 in at least one poll.

  • They will always be mythical, but that's a good list to go off of to get a more realistic or true list of champions when you just count the years that they list only 1 champ, giving you an undisputed champion.

    Undisputed Championships
    ND 8
    SC 6
    Oklahoma 6
    Alabama 5

    That's a true champions list.

  • I have been drinking a little today and no access to my computer with 0% chance of investigating BUT, did ND beat Bama in'73 in bowl game? Then, did Bama claim a title that year?

  • you can count them anyway you want to but you are a idiot! the pure jealousy of some people on this board makes me sick. we have been cheated out of more national championships than most teams have won. now your trying to tell people that we have only 5 true championships. don't even get me started on the historic northern bias against southern football powers. you just have to look at 1966 and 1977 to see this.
