American Heavyweight boxing

  • Why can't America find a beast now a days? There was I bigger sports figure in America than the Heavyweight champ less than 20 years ago. It's an afterthought now and a damn shame. Shannon Briggs was as close as we've been but he has no chin. Bryant Jennings is the supposed next big thing. He's about to fight on NBC sports network now and his chin will be tested.

  • Good question. The Heavyweight division as a whole in boxing is pitiful imo.

No necassarily. Just in general. Not to mention heavyweight boxing is a little different than it used to be.

When I was growing up there weren't guys like the Kiltchkos.

  • Go around asking kids if they would rather box or do MMA. A lot of great up and comers in MMA, while boxing just doesn't have the kids attention anymore.

It has nothing to do with MMA. Heavyweight boxing was in decline long before MMA came around.

Not sure how many guys in MMA would even be heavyweights in boxing. I don't follow the sport so not sure.

The heavyweight fighters in the heavyweight division would likely be heavyweight boxers.

If they had a brain they would be boxing. Way more money in boxing than mma.

Yeah that is pretty good size. It is all about range in heavyweight now it seems.

  • Exposure and title, Heavyweight champion of the world used to be the baddest man on earth. They still make more money over a career than most football players but they don't get the exposure.

  • All the heavyweight boxers are defensive ends nowadays. I dont think ufc heavyweights would gave been boxers. Most come from wrestling or bjj backgrounds.

This. Most times mma guys suck with boxing. There are a few that are good at stand up, but no where near a pro boxers level.

Most MMA fighters have respectable boxing, or at least boxing defense. Even Randy Couture(who wasn't exactly a good stand up fighter) never got hit once in his fight with James Toney. I wouldn't say they suck at boxing. They just have to concentrate on more than one specific art form.

Couture took Toney down immediately. He never stood with him. Even as a shot fighter, Toney would have destroyed him in a boxing match.

Couture did take him down fairly quickly. There was about a 20 second stand off where Toney never even threw a punch. Not sure what "shot fighter" means. If you mean his age and the amount of fights he had been in, Couture was right up there with him.

By shot fighter, I mean his skills and reflexes were eroding, he was out of shape, and was speaking with slurred speech. Toney had around 70 boxing matches. That fight was circus side show. No idea why Dana allowed it.

Buys. And I'm sure Toney wanted that payday, or else he wouldn't have accepted it. People like my dad, who is an old school boxing fan but hates it now, ordered it to see how Toney would do. I told him before he bought it that Toney would get demolished the same way Couture would get demolished in a boxing ring with Toney.

Yeah I guess. Always thought Dana was against those Pride style sideshows. But he also brought kimbo in. I know Toney needed the money. Maybe Dana did him a favor

If kids knew the finances involved it would be boxing hands down. A good heavyweight can make several million dollars a fight. Once you get to be the number 1 contender it goes to about 20 million. How long would it take to make that kinda change in MMA? Give America a great heavyweight and it captures more interest than anything the MMA can give.
