  • Just awful.

Prayers go out to the families of those hurt or killed in this.

I'm not someone who wants to sit down and psychoanalyze everything. But the issues, IMO, go far deeper than just "access to guns." What on earth would make someone look at the Newtown shooting and say "Oh, killing people, that looks like a good decision"? What makes people want to make the leap between "I'm upset and angry" and "I want to kill people"?

    It's just...horribly sad.

  • I'm honestly at the point that I think the media is more to blame than the things they are trying to pin it on. I don't have a solution, but you can't tell me that all the attention that these fvcking nutjobs get from pulling stunts like this doesn't give another suicidal maniac the thought of "well why not go out with a bang" mentality.

After John Lennon was shot, McCartney and Yoko Ono always used to request that people not use the name of the killer when talking about the incident. I think that would be a good way to take moral leadership: allow the police to release the name of the killer, but otherwise, don't report his name or publish his photo.

I think they are more to blame than video games.

The media can choose not to plaster their faces all over the damn place. The country can't go out and destroy every gun in the country.

I can agree with the premise, but I'd rather use the phrase "the media contributes to the mentality," rather than saying they're "more to blame." If indeed, that's the mentality that these shooters have. The killers still need to take responsibility for their actions.

Actually that is a fair statement and closer to what I was going for. I was kind of building off the "video game" argument in another thread.

    No doubt.

They give all these idiots the spotlight everytime there is a shooting somewhere. Obviously with the school shooting that is fine.. but everytime some idiot decides to Derp, I don't think it should be analyzed for hours on end. Kind of like the running onto the field in sports. This is life & death but people die everyday for stupid reasons. Why give them the coverage?

Agreed. Without the media making them famous all of these psychos would probably just off themselves quietly in their mothers basement.

Ok. Sorry, I misunderstood. When you said "things they are trying to pin it on" I thought that meant guns.

The point should be made that we had mass shootings before the 24 hour news cycle. Remember the Texas Sniper in 1966?

And how many have we had in the last week? All by separate individuals with no connection to one another. I think we are up to four in the past seven days.

Edit: Also I get that you don't like guns and all. You have still not given one logical explanation on how to stop this from happening with gun control. If your solution is to get rid of all the guns in the country, I hope that you have an extensive collection of Rosetta Stone tapes. We would be overrun in about a week. Maybe we would get lucky and a country with good food would conquer us.

  • I still think there needs to be research done on the medication all these killers have taken, somebody pointed out that all these guys had been on some form of medication for mental issues, ADHD etc.

Exactly, all major news outlets shouldnt even say the POS name. No one needs to waste a good breathe on saying it and by putting the name out there the shooter gets the attention he craves.

And the sad thing is that it will never happen. Deep down our sick society wants, and in many cases, needs to put a face to these atrocities. The news outlets are more worried about giving their viewers what they want, to make sure they don't lose eyeballs on their stations, than they are the consequences of the fame they give these psychopaths.

It's much easier for them to blame it on kids playing Grand Theft Auto.

I own guns. You haven't made any attempt to understand my opinions on gun control but that idiotic rant about being overrun by other countries is a good start I guess.

When I was in Berlin during the '06 World Cup, some teenager ran through the new train station on opening night and stabbed 16 people. They wouldn't release his name and blurred out his face whenever he was shown on camera being transported to different places by police.

I always liked that better than the almost celebratization of our criminals, covering their story like they're famous or something. It seemed like it kept focus on the victims instead of everyone trying to blame something.

I haven't read but like two of your posts bitching about gun control. I don't even know what you are suggesting. I'm saying that no matter what you are suggesting, it's not going to work.

You can't stop a psychopath with intentions on committing a mass murder/suicide from getting what he needs to accomplish the task. If he is crazy enough, and determined enough, to walk in a room and shoot a bunch of innocent people and turn the gun on himself, then he is going to find what he needs regardless of what regulations you are recommending.

So let me understand how my idiotic rant is any less idiotic than your idea on how to stop a nutjob from walking into a room and committing a mass murder/suicide. I think my "idiotic" rant is more logical than anything than you could come up with. I was going overboard to prove a point.

  • There's always a classic question in the communications business, which is does the media dictate what the people talk and think about or do they simply give the people what they want? I've had to go both angles in my job (I work in advertising).
