Any DL moved to OT success stories?

  • From other teams. We've moved RSo to be Cam Erving to LT. He has all the tools and is a smart kid as well. Anyone else moved a DL over to start at OT that year?

We had quite a few guys on our 88 NC team move from DL/LB that had great success as OL and later played in the NFL. Better than moving OL to DL. Lou Holtz once said next stop after OL is the bus line, or something to that affect.

  • We moved Ryan McMahon from DT to Center 5 years ago and he turned out well. He was 6'1 280 and simply a conference USA level recruit that overachieved. I know Clemson has a DT moving to OG.

But we're moving Erving to LT.

Will be interesting. Luckily he won't face his first future NFL DE of any kind until week five when he plays a future roster filler in Ryne Giddins from USF. So he will get some build up time.

Are you expecting him to start this year?

  • Basically at LT we have him and a Juco EE that turns out will be a Sr named Daniel Glauser. Glauser is 6'6 325 and a little heavy right now. He's a good kid and Jimbo says he learns quick and is a listener.

I would say if you held a gun to my head today I'd predict Erving would start 10 games and Glauser 4 this fall. Erving is a big time physical talent. He's 6'5 300 right now and will add more weight. Our OL has the guys it wants, they are all just ~20 years old aside from Hart who's 17.

  • Hard to say it's a "success" story, but Chima Okoli did decently for PSU at RT, despite starting on the DL.

  • Mike Pouncey was recruited outta HS to play OL but played DT exclusively his freshmen year before moving to his rightful RG spot during his sophomore year. Not sure if that's relevant ITT but there's that.

Relevant no doubt. Our saving grace is our schedule and even more then that just some odd luck. Teams like Clemson, NCSt, and even BC or Wake are teams that aren't great on the field (yet have beaten us lately I know) but usually have some beast DL. All those teams have minced meat for DLs this year.

And you won't see us til very late in the season where our depth, or lack thereof, will most definitely be taking its toll.

  • I mean if Powell is healthy and finally fulfilling potential then he'll get the best of Cam. But if Powell is out and it's Clay Burton and Dante Fowler there then yeah, another crazy easy matchup (compared to what you might expect).

Best REs we face all year are definitely.....

    1. Ronald Powell
    2. James Gayle -- VT

    3. Ryne Giddins -- USF
    4. Malliciah Goodman --- Clem
    5. Shayon Green ---- Miami

Besides Okoli, Levi Brown also started out on the DL. He became an all-american at PSU and was a first round draft pick.

What year did he move? How'd he do that year?

Brown moved his RS Freshman year. He was lazy and didn't put it all together until his final year (actually I think his JR year was good too...). That lazy thing has carried over to the NFL. When he is focused, he plays great, but he don't have the drive that he should.

As for Okoli he moved his RS Jr year. He was decent as an OT, all things considered. He made mistakes and had technique issues, but he generally wasn't the problem with our OL.

I see Levi Brown started all games and played 870 reps as a RFr. Pretty good. I'm sure he was spotty. Erving is a hard worker and a year older. Hopefully he can manage.

Seems like Erving is impressing so far. Fisher called him both intelligent and very athletic for his size. Jimbo also said he loves his speed. I tell you this if he is holding his own against our D-line this may pan out to be a really good move. Havent heard much about Derrick Mitchell so I wonder how he is adjusting to the move.

Derrick didn't move. He was going to but when the coaches learned Glauser would be a Sr they asked Cam instead.

  • Erving has to start or the move was stupid imo and i expect him to be all acc by next year

Kid is a player, im certain of that much

He was playing almost as well as jernigan last year at DT

He was excellent when he was motivated. The guy has a ton of talent, he just get complacent.

Okoli is the opposite. Not very talented or athletic, but he was a hard worker and did better than most thought he would moving from DT to RT. That's not saying that he was good, but he was servicable. For our O-Line over the last few years, servicable was a positive.

  • I believe Mike Williams from Texas who went to the Bills #4 or 5 overall started on def. I thought I remember seeing that at some point. However, as an FSU fan I'm not positive.

  • I was a little unsure of the move at first but if he can be a solid lt than this will be the most important move Jimbo makes all year. We have 3 ol I like in Matias, Jackson and hart. Adding a 4th would be very key. Our center will be stork or Barron who are serviceable which is fine for center in the college game. Not many wilforks out there in ncaa

  • Last year we moved DT Dan France to play left tackle. After starting out pretty awful, he managed to be pretty serviceable at LT for most of the season.
