Any Fishermen On Here?

  • SoCalEase said...

Fish all through out Cali and Baja Cali. My first love is stream fishing/hiking through out the Sierra Nevada's/Mammoth but I mostly stay in SoCal fishing the local spots that have to stock fish because we suck out here on the West coast. Cats, Bass, Bluegill in the summer and trout during the winter.

Take a few salty Baja trips every year from San Quintin, Bajia de Los Angeles, all the way south to Loreto.

    Good times.

Just fished the Lower Owens last weekend. Really good conditions on the Lower O right now especially around 11am to around 2pm ish. Almost everything on nymphs since it seems like the fish are grouped up in deep. Got some good action on streamers in the afternoon using a fast sink leader.

I was actually planning on making it up to Hot Creek, but it started to dump on Saturday and they were requiring chains just 20 miles outside of Bishop.

My first love is actually casting jigs/lures for Calico, Yellowtail, Bonito, Spotties etc., but recently I have become a fly fishing addict.

I've always been interested in learning how to fly fish. I've heard it's a lot of fun, but that was from my grandpa's friends that do it. I don't have any buddies that I could go along with to learn how, so I've just stuck to regular ol fishing.

Buy a cheapfly rod set at walmart or somewhere for about $25... watch a quick youtube tutorial, walk out into your yard and start practice casting. Tie a piece of yarn to the end of the line instead of using a fly/hook. I used braided line(spiderwire) instead of the tapered mono leaders so I wouldn't lose a ton of line. You'll snap off a ton of gear at first.

Its actually pretty fun and entertaining once you learn. I am still a spinner guy but love to break out the fly rod when I get a chance.

  • I can definitely talk some fishing. I like to think that I live right in the center of the best fishing in the world here in South La. My brother owns a charter fishing company so I would say he is more of a fisherman than me but I like to get out there and catch a limit or "2" ...

    i've been fishing 40+ years...last 25 strictly fly fishing...mainly for trout.

we had some good threads earlier on tab...I live in bham so i try to fish north georgia/east tennessee once a month for trout. We do an anual western trip once a year in the summer.

The key is to slowly build up really nice gear once you know you're committed to the hobby. buy discontinued rods at 1/2 price from a local fly shop is another way to go.

That is the same advice someone else gave me. I'm absolutely addicted to fly fishing now. I am now saving up for a Scott S4 rod.

  • I personally love either fishing the marsh for reds and drum or going out to the rigs and catching Red Snapper.

Snapper fishing is probably my favorite and the rules on limits and times when we can fish certain zones actually changed this year so the season is longer and we can now keep 4 per person instead of a limit of 2.

Some great fishing though. Take the river out to East Bay or South Pass and fish free lining. You cannot get your bait to 20 feet in 60 foot water because at 10 foot you are getting hooked up with monster fish. It really is a good time, the only problem is on days it is rough even the most hardened water veterans will probably ralph.

That does sound like a lot of fun, I've never fishing for any of those species before. Like I had mentioned in the OP, crappie and walleye are what I fish for the most. Smallmouth bass are fun as hell to go after too, fight much harder than a largemouth IMO. I've also really gotten into Muskie fishing over the past year and a half. Caught my first one last fall.

Ha, yea that is something I don't have to worry about out here in LA. Like some one else said, buy some cheapy stuff at first and work your way up to the pricey stuff. It makes a huge difference to fish with the nice expensive stuff(just like spinners and conventionals) but for starting out, it's not a need unless you have cash to blow.

    SoCalEase

  • Yea we fish Bass here all the time, that is actually one of my brothers specialties. I have tried "jerking a worm" a million times in my life and suck at it but do like throwing a spinner bait. Never caught a Muskie or a walleye before.

There's definitely places within 2 hours of where I live that are great areas for trout/fly fishing. It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to talk to a shop though either before I get started.

my last 3 rods have all been purchased at 45% off...winston b2x (9'6) winston gvx (9'5) and a sage zxl (9'4)

a lot of people make the mistake and buy expensive stuff that they never use. there's a lot of good rod makers out there know. temple fork makes quality stuff at a minimal price all things considered.

also important to establish a good relationship with a fly shop in every location that you fish.
I usually get a guide my first trip to a new river, usually the first day...rest of the trip that shop is happy to give you good information.

    are you in michigan?

Muskie and walleye are fun as hell to catch. My buddy actually caught the Iowa state record walleye this spring, 32.5 inches, but didn't realize it was the record until the next morning. He had already released it. And catching Muskie is just an adrenaline rush. It's an absolute blast.

Love it up there. I am surprised the conditions are doing well up there right now. Last time I went up there on a winter trip, the poles were never unpacked but the snow board got plenty of use. Managed to make it to the hot springs just past the church but fishing wasn't an option.

That is good advice because you are going to spend money on other things, especially flies. I don't even want to think about how much money I have spent on flies in the last 2 months.

My friend has the Winston B2x in a 8'6 4wt. I think he got it at a close out price so it was a really good deal.

I actually cast tested TFO and the lower end Winston (passport) I think. I ended up going with Allen Fly Fishing. They are a small start-up from Washington. I decided to go with them because they had such great reviews online. I was even able to correspond with the owner and their pro-staff guy personally helped me pick out a rod. I also got a great Christmas deal which really put them over the top compared to other brands.

I'm in so Cal, but most of my fly fishing is Eastern Sierra. I want to start fly fishing the surf, but that requires another rod so that will have to wait.

It is my first season fishing the Lower Owens so I don't know how this year compares to others. The guides at the fly shop in Bishop told me that it is good up until around March. He said the flows can get too fast around then.

  • When I lived in Michigan we used to do tons of walleye fishing on Lake Erie and Saginaw Bay. Erie was simply a meat run and the bay was for trophy fish. Salmon fishing in Michigan was always great on Lake Michigan and average on Huron. Would love to get out to Iowa and do some pheasant hunting tho

I'm not a hunter, but I do have friends that go quite often. I've heard that the pheasant population has dramatically decreased over the last 5 or 6 years. Western Iowa used to be a FANTASTIC place to pheasant hunt, but it sounds like even out there has gone downhill. I'm not really sure why either.

  • I'm a big bass fisherman, its a way of lifefor me. I live in on wheeler lake and wilson, pickwick, gunterville is right down the road so it's bass fishing heaven! Trying to come up the ranks and try to fish in the BFL in a couple of years, but still need to master some more techniques. Being 25 i still have a lot to learn but love everything about fishing.

Fish on the banks of Huron this summer and caught a couple of small mouth. I also fish a little lake called foot pond and caught a huge small mouth.

  • I'm from the middle Ga area, and live on a pretty small lake. Crappie and bass fishing is what's most popular around here, mostly trolling for crappie but shooting docks is where the fun is at. My dad and I started getting into offshore fishing after we spearfished for a little while. We generally go out of Carrabelle, FL, and it's a blast. Duck hunting is my true passion. If none of yall have tried it you need to asap.

I've always enjoyed fishing Guntersville more than any other lake in the state of Alabama.

Logan Martin isn't a bad choice either. If I go fishing though, I'm either looking for bass or catfish. Bass tastes like shit but I love to fish them all the same. Catfish is the tits though. Easy fish to catch and my favorite fish sandwich by far.
