Any Libertarians on the board?

  • I was at a philosophy club meeting this afternoon, and we discussed libertarianism and the idea of spontaneous order. As I understand it, the idea behind libertarianism is that social and 'political' (if you can call it that) order should come from the natural tendency that people have to create order. My question is, why do libertarians have any faith in us to do that? And in what way is this idea diffrent than the constitution and the republic that it created. That doesn't seem like it was a dictated order. It seems to me that a libertarian government would find its way back inside one of the current political sturctures? Thoughts?

I think you need to get laid tonight. More than once

I probably will. I've got a new girl and am about to open a bottle of Jager/smoke some bud at a friends house. That said, I can still enjoy some philosophical discussion.

I don't usually smoke more than once or twice a week, but I am big on the high-end stuff as well. That sucks that you have cut yourself off. Any particular reason?

No. The natural tendency of all things, including man, is disorder. However, man, as in intelligent being, also realizes the value and need for order. The desire for order is not a natural but a learned response. Man has learned that he must give up some amount of liberty to obtain other equally important things, most notably safety and security. As for "why do libertarians have any faith in us to do that?", what is the alternative? It is chaos and a result clearly worse off for them and everyone else. In sum, a republic based on a constitution is an attempt to balance off the desire for maximum liberty with the need for other things. Just because the balance is not always perfect, does not mean the impulse to try is wrong or unnatural.

  • I consider myself somewhat libertarian. To me, that just means that I want the government to be much much smaller and for many areas that the government currently controls to be privatized. That probably sounds more conservative than libertarian but conservatives are expanding government control as well, just at a slower pace than liberals. I'd just be happy if the constitution was followed by it's original intent and not interpreted to mean something else by people with an alternative agenda (both reps and dems).

  • All of these answers have some measure of truth in them, imo. As I understand Libertarianism to be, it's the belief that using man's own natural tendencies to obtain the desired result is the best possible outcome. For example, I believe that man is inherently greedy. Hoarding is an instinct long ingrained in us. Why not use that natural greed for positive outcomes? The consumption tax is an offshoot of that. The more money you have, the more you buy, the more tax you pay. It's your choice whether to pay the tax or not. Give in to your instincts and hoard or fight it and be frugal. I could be wrong though. twocents

  • In many ways I am. I think people should ultimately be responsible for their own life. As long as you are not performing an act that is in violation of someone else's freedom or safety do what you want and deal with the consequences of them. That being said I am def. for Cain. We need someone who has proven they know what it takes to balance a budget and make a profit, because when it comes down to it the gov. should basically be ran like a corporation. Four more years of Obama and the best thing you can do is give up and ride the welfare system.
