I've gone once before, sucked ass and fell all day long. Wasn't really sore at all the next day though. Didn't have the money to do it, now that I got a decent job, I'm getting serious about it. Got the concept of turning down in my head, justhave to get it from there, to the rest of my body lol.

  • -Learn how to carve/turn. Nothing like seeing a beginner dude/chic hauling butt down the mountian in a straight line.
-Don't let your homies set you up. Jumps, going through the hard runs right off the bat.
    -Pad your butt
-If you have old sports leg injuries, bad knees, ankles, wrap that ish up because its going to give out.
-Stay away from trees and ice

Keep your weight on the front foot and steer with the back foot. If possible get you some wrist braces so you dont break one when you fall 1000 times, oh and your butt will be sore!

Give it up and try a real sport. Skiing for example.

  • Don't buy or use any Burton crap. The stuff sucks and falls apart easy. First few days your but is going to hurt like hell and think about buying wrist guards for the first few times so you hurt yourself too bad.

pay for lessons. it's not cool and your friends will tell you they can teach you in a day, but lessons from someone who's paid to teach people how to do what you want to do are worth it.

haven't been in a couple of years and just booked my flight to aspen this morning. can't wait.

You really only need 1 or 2 just so you get the basic concepts down, rest is just learning the feel of it.

    This.

The best thing I ever did was get a lesson. I took one lesson for about 2-3 hours when I first started. It helped more than you can imagine. If I'm not being stupid, I'll go down the mountain without any falls easily. The best thing I got from the lesson was just carving/turning.

Need to take lessons until you can link turns. Once the linking begins it gets a lot easier.

  • One way I have been able to get a few beginners up and running (who refused to take lessons) is to teach them to focus on using all heel turns to start.

This is how you'll stop yourself and check your speed when it gets too fast. It'll also allow you to go down runs without faceplanting every 20 yards.

This makes snowboarding fun right off the bat. Once you get comfortable with heel turns, start mixing in toe turns and then linking heel/toe/heel/toe.

    Just how I learned

Yeah... I went out to Colorado for Thanksgiving to meet my brother when I was 18. I had never snowboarded before.

Before doing anything, he took me to the top of a blue/black at Breck and said "I'll see you at the bottom"

So I had to forego toe turns for safety, haha.

Very important if you are night boarding. I ate shit because Snow Summit sometimes likes to ice up at night especially higher on the mountain.

  • ha - you guys had people who were teaching you at least! i took a snowboard w/ me on a spring break trip back in like 1987 when NO ONE knew wtf a snowboard even was, so there was no such thing as snowboard lessons, especially in europe (i was living in germany at the time). i was a skate rat and knew i wanted to snowboard after growing up skiing for 10+ years. 100% completely self taught. didn't get good (well, decent) until i moved back to the states (new hampshire) and could go every other weekend.

for reference, here's the board i was on:

I went once about 3 years ago. By the end of the day I was able to turn, just couldn't link the turns. Everytime I tried to link them, I either fell on my face, or on my ass.
