now his eye is bad again after running around some. wtf?

Sorry I've been away. It is possible that it is just an allergic reaction due to a sting bite or contact dermatitis. I would give him benadryl (1mg/pound). I would also wash his head just in case it is a contact dermatitis so that we make sure if we got into something we are allergic to that it is washed off.

It is also still possible that he could have cherry eye as sometimes they will come and go prior to getting them fixed. They often will eventually get a little more inflammed with time and swell to the point that it no longer will come and go.

So should I give him anything?

That is left up to you. If the vet said no then maybe try and hold off

Are you a vet or in vet school? Assuming one of them because of the dvm in your name.

  • Hope that your dog is okay Billy. I know how you are with that dog of your's. Hopefully you gave him some benadryl and it turned out to be just something allergic.

No vet would charge $ 300 for a steroid shot. It would probably run between $40-50 for an exam and $20-30 for a steroid shot.

  • Well I gave him Benadryl last night and when I got up this morning it looked better. Cherry eye was gone. The red on his mouth was a little darker. Vet called and said to stay with the Benadryl and see what it is like tomorrow

Sounds good, I'm glad it has improved. It was funny, the first thing that walked through the door today was a 16 week English bulldog pup with a cherry eye.

Ha good stuff. Gotta love the English bulldogs. I got home today and he looks the same as this morning on the mouth but after running around the cherry eye was back. Didn't look as bad but was still there. Gave him more Benadryl like doc said. Will reevaluate tomorrow I guess. He acts the same. Like nothing is wrong

  • Have you tried getting the dog high yet? It has medicinal value. I heard you blow it into his ear. I'm not sure if that's because of blood vessels or just some BS from the school yard.

Well at least you know that if he's acting the same that it's nothing that is going to kill him. Bulldogs are always suspectible to a little more health issues than most other dogs. At worst it will set you back a couple of hundred dollars, at the most if surgery isn't required, which it doesn't sound like it's going to. It could be a lot worse if it was something like hip dysplasia or some of the more serious health issues that bulldogs are susceptible to.

  • It's very simple to get rid of cherry eye.Sterilize a pair of tweezers and a pair of small scissors and get someone to hold the dog, pull out on it with the tweezers and snip it off. There will usually only be one drop of blood to wipe off and most dogs don't even act like they feel any pain.
By the way this is my first post on this board but I've been reading it for a few months.I couldn't stand it anymore so I had to join to post. Roll Tide Rollflex

    Welcome to the board.

I'm not sure that I would personally do what you just suggested, but I'm not a professional and would feel real uncomfortable working that close to a dog's eye. That very well might be all it takes, but I would be so nervous that the dog would jerk or something and me fvck up his eye severely that I wouldn't try it personally.

    Thanks RATT

I'm not a vet but I've been a kennel owner for over 20 years and owned as many as 75 dogs at one time. When you have this many you have to learn to do most of your own vet work. I had an old vet show me once on one of mine years ago how to cut out the cherry eye and I've done probably 18 to 20 on my own over the years. It's pretty simple and most of the dogs I've did, I didn't even have anyone to hold them and they never flinched. The trick is to do it fast and the dog never even realizes what you just did.
I guess if you only have 1 or 2 dogs the vets need to make a living too but the only thing I use my vet for anymore is rabies shots.

    SmileyBama

  • Yeah Smiley,

I give my dogs all their shots (outside of rabies of course) and take off all my puppies dew claws but that is as far as I'll go. I guess I also do the heartworm prevention without vets help by just buying a 40 mL bottle of Ivomec for about $40 but still get the vet to check them every six months to a year. It's a joke spending 20 dollars a month on a heartworm pill. I can only imagine how much money that you had to pay to keep up with the uptake of 75 dogs. Goodness gracious. The food alone had to cost you a few grand a month. The most I've ever had at one time was 9. At my last home I built 10 20' x 20' kennels but over the years I downsized. A couple of the older one's have passed away and some other's I sold to buddies of mine. I now have 3 and let my ex wife keep one for protection when I moved into my new home.

Well he's not a puppet and Its "usually" a puppy thing. Will it go away? No. It has to be surgically corrected. Will benedryl help? Uh no. An NSAID or topical steroid would but they have to get that from a vet. If it happened acutely its probably something else(not cherry eye). You don't mess around with eyes, He needs a vet if you like having a dog with 2 eyes
