Any avid mountain bikers here?

  • I haven't ridden in a few years since I sold my Santa Cruz Heckler... so now that Summer is closing in I've got the itch to ride again. Anyway searching on Craigslist I found a 2001 Intense Tracer for $1,000, it looks to be in great condition for its age, so I was wondering if its in deed worth 1k. Pic below.

  • It all depends on the components really. I can't see very well from my phone.

Still a grand is a lot for a used bike. What did those retail for new?

I have been riding a little this year but not nearly enough. Need to get back out on the trails.

  • If you are looking in the $1000 range take a look at a Cannondale Trail SL 29er 3......

    Some of the advantages are:

    1) New Bike
    2) Components are 11 years newer therefore technology has advanced and they are better
3)It's a 29er, which is the future of mtb and are a lot more fun to ride and easier to get over obstacles than a normal 26er

All good points. I would imagine a 2001 would have a lot of wear and tear on it.

  • I do a little biking here and there. My friends say I ride like Lance Armstrong without PED's

Perhaps their frames are good, but it's still an 11 year old bike so all of the components and the frame have 11 years of wear on them and who knows what the up keep was like on it.... Just my opinion I wouldn't risk $1000 on an 11 year old bike.

Checked it out, not a big fan of hard tails... I know Cannondale had a reputation cracking for years in the past (Crack-n-Fail), haven't followed them lately.

that's what worries me... I was hoping it was from someone that may have only ridden for a few years then threw it in the garage, that's why I prefer to go used for high end bikes.

Just looking at the pics it doesn't look well cared for, I know if I am trying to sell a bike I clean them up to almost show room clean, this guy looks like he just got done riding and decided to throw it up for sale

Not even going to mention how much I have "invested" in bikes, but then again I have raced competitively for the better part of a decade and 95% of my commuting is done by bike. No way would I drop a grand on an 11yr old bike, Intense or not, unless it was simply an older frame with completely new components and build set. You are better off with looking at new "off-brand" hardtail 29ers. I have owned a Motobecane(bikesdirect.com) and it was awesome for the pricepoint. This is a solid deal http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/motobecane/fantom29_pro_xii.htm . Unless you are doing downhill, you can handle pretty much anything with that bike, no need for the efficiency-sapping rear suspension.

What is "29er" exactly? does the rear absorb better than previous hard-tails?

29" wheels, as opposed to the conventional 26" wheels. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/29er_(bicycle). Because of the decrease in approach angle you can handle anything on a 29er hardtail that a full suspension 26" bike could.

Wow 3" makes that big a difference eh? I never would have guessed... there's still gotta be bounce in the rear going downhill tho right?

What kind of downhill are you doing? Big drops?

The trails I frequent have some pretty decent drops, I usually ride the more advanced sections... not like I'm riding off cliffs or anything.
