That would be considered a "Dry Drunk" In all seriousness though...I stopped on Feb. 2nd 2009, and it has been great!! It's tough for the first month, but even tougher if you are left to your own devices. I don't miss it one bit. Good luck if you are serious about it though. Prayers are sent your way brother!

I quit cold turkey 11 years. Benefits outweighed the negatives.

I had to quit the hard stuff man. It was taking me over the edge. Now, i just have some beer here and there. maybe a Vodka drink to have something different.

I can tell you this - life is better too. I believe i was an alcoholic - during that time, I didn't think so. But i analyze what i was doing almost every night after work, just to "relax". that's how i told myself it was ok. One, would lead to two, then three, next thing you know man, i'm getting up on a freaking wed morning with a hangover.

haven't had the hard stuff (dark whisky is my problem) for 1.5 years now. lost 40Lbs, my wife and I get along better, play with my kids more, work is easier to handle.

Just thought i'd add some positives for you to think about. I still drink me some brews now. but it's harder to get lit up when you don't want to consume too many calories anymore. with the hard stuff, you just make the drink that much stiffer then next time.

    good luck.

  • Interesting. I am probably by definition a dry drunk. I have not been drunk since I got in trouble in 1999, but I still drink in work events and social settings with my wife, but in the back if my mind feel I am one bad situation away from going crazy. I had to totally change my friends and social circle. Having a family is what keeps my on the straight and narrow but that fear lingers. Just one man's experience.

Family is why I quit. I like my wife and kids more than alcohol.

  • Yep. I have not had a drink in like a year and a half. After about 3 months you won't even think about it anymore. Exercise and get into a sort of health nut type of situation. If you do, drinking and fast food will become the devil to you. No way would you put that stuff in your body if you knew what it took to get it out. Also, it's amazing how stupid people look when they are wasted. I used to be one of those guys for a very long time though so I get it. I promise after a while you won't think about it. When it's not even on the menu, it's not on your mind.

Not sure I can give you advice, you seem to be getting some good responses. I can say that my (biological) father was an alcoholic before he died, and my brother is also. My brother lost his wife, and damn near his daughter (mother was almost granted permission to go back to England permanently), but has since jumped on the bandwagon and has completely turned his life around. For the most part, it was cold turkey. He did start going to church regularly which has helped him tremendously as he lives out in CA so our support is limited as a family. Do what you got to do bro. I already have, and will continue to pray for your success

Ha. The fact of the matter is I enjoy craft beer/good liquor too much to up and quit. I have total control over my want for it at any time. Therefore, until something happens that makes me physically incapable of doing it, i'll never stop.

  • I always considered myself a social binge drinker. Would drink alot in social settings because i wanted to be drunk but had no problem stopping at just one otherwise. Last couple years have given up the binge drinking altogether and its just a few drinks tops though pretty consistent with one beer a night. However currently going through a divorce, which im convinced is at least in part due to her drinking issues, so hopefully more social situations for me in the near future.

  • Does OP have drinking issue? I don't have drinking issue, but I stopped drinking (temporary) when my daughter (now 8th months old) was born. It was a decision I chose bc I don't want her to know her dad--ever-- as a drunk guy. It is different for me, though: We adopted her, newborn, from a very bad, drug addict and we want to provide her w/ an environment free from that.

I may drink a glass or two, but I never want to be drunk or appear to not control myself around her....or else I am not much better than the situation she came from. Sorry to drop too much personal, but point is that everyone stops for whatever their motivation may be.

  • I quit getting drunk when I got a PI once. S*** ain't worth it. Now I just go to the bar and chill, I might have two beers, but usually I just get a coke just so people won't keep asking my why I am not drinking. You know look the part.

Best thing is I don't ever make an ass out of myself, and I never wake up the next day hungover and trying to remember if I made an ass of myself.

But honestly I hardly even go to the bar anymore.
