Anyone else get tired of hearing about the service academies?

  • I think at times it can get a little over the top. I'm all for spending a little bit of time talking about the players and the commitment it takes. But when it becomes the sole narrative of the game it can get annoying

    So you're watching a game with one of the academies involved and you're tired hearing about a 18-22 yr old man committing his life to service for his country?

    A little perspective maybe...quite a few of these men, especially Army Cadets, will be in harm's way in the very near future and may never return home. I think they've earned the 3 hours of praise.

    I didn't see any issue with how he stated it. I know that he was referring to them talking for not talking about anything outside of political topics instead of the game and football acumen of the kids they were watching though.

    I admire the hell out of those kids, but lets not get it all twisted. None of those boys have seen any action overseas yet. The focus should be on football during a football game IYAM, and I think that's what joetheogre was trying to point out.

    I think your getting all riled up for no good reason honestly. It's a football game hoss. They should be talking about football.

    These cadets get plenty of love from people around the country. They just made a 2.5 hour documentary about the service academy guys that played sports. If I'm watching a game though, I would personally rather hear about the game instead of what they do in their everyday lives.

    Just me though.

    You said it better than I did, but this is exactly what I was trying to get across.

    During a football game the focus should be on the game. Of course I expect a lot of background on the teams, but Navy shouldn't get 90% of the coverage. It's unfair to Arizona State or whoever else they are playing.

    Has nothing to do with being anti-military. I just feel like the praise goes over the top at times at the expense of the broadcast

    You may be right. I've had plenty of friends that served including my best friend whom past away a little over a year ago.

    I think that we are just saying that there isn't much of a reason to ignore the actual football game itself. We aren't hating on the kids or anything. Still they haven't served any more time, the students that is unless someone jumped in after their tours, than anyone else. A football game shouldn't be broadcast that way IYAM. Say how proud you are in the first couple of minutes and then actually get back to calling the game.

  • I didnt watch the entire broadcast, unfortunately it was a blow out.

    I didnt take the comments to be anti-military.

    Id imagine the network was using the service angle for the 'human interest' segment of the broadcast as these 'athletes' have almost no chance of turning pro after school and service.

    I agree with this, I am a Marine that has gotten twisted a couple times on here in the past from comments but I found nothing offensive here. I tend to agree with the OP in his statements

    It's a choice they make. I certainly appreciate the ones that do serve overseas after they're finished at school. Make no mistake about that.

    It is their tendency to dominate the broadcast and the sometimes ridiculous hyperbole the announcers use regarding them that gets annoying.

    Yea, seeing how I almost attended one;have relatives and friends who have attended them; have relatives and friends who have served and died for this country. Yes I understand the sacrifice.

    As Ive said previously, until you have served and sacrificed then you'll understand.

    This by NO MEANS a slam on any poster here or a 'they are better then someone else'. It is what it is.

    When watching a game with a service academy, Ive just come to accept that the broadcast will lean heavily towards the 'serving' angle and Im perfectly fine with that.

  • They've got The Citadel here in Charleston which isn't service but still a very prestigious military academy, most of those kids go to get that degree which pretty much guarantees employment or acceptance into grad school. I don't see why those 18-22yr olds should be revered in any way until they sign up to fight for our country, until they they're just kids making a business decision.

    I attended a service academy for two reasons........

    1.) A free education that is second to none.

    2.) Free, all expense paid travel to foreign countries where I could meet and interact with interesting people and then kill their curry smelling, Allah worshiping asses.

    For that, my tax paying American brothers, I thank you.
