Anyone ever lived in Brazil?

  • Or spent time there of any kind? Rio De Janeiro. Have a job offer to be apart of a sports marketing and event management firm down there and am seriously considering it. Everything online makes it very enticing. Classic international city where if you go where you shouldn't you'll get shanked and/or raped. If you get unlucky you'll get punched and robbed. Other than that it seems like a really amazing place. Seems like a great place to be and be middle class over the next 5 years.

  • Not sure what your options are like in the States but it seems like it would be an amazing experience and be a lot of fun as well. Would seem like being on Vacation. My cousin actually recently got married and moved down there as thats where her husband is from. She loves it. Personally I think the Spanish would be difficult but it would be very enticing. I would just recommend doing thorough research on the Company. Would hate to make such a huge commitment to going down there and not enjoying it.

  • Not worried about Portuguese. I would purchase Rosetta Stone and make sure i take that seriously the three months before going down and then I'd likely need two months to really get going with it.

    It just seems like an adventure to me and there's a part of me that wants to be apart of a government/economy at that stage. The infrastructure revolution going on down there right now is amazing.

    Haven't been, but if you're young, single and making good bank I'd do it in a second.

    Job pays 30K a year in USD equivalency. But the median income within the city I believe is 17-18,000USD so I'd be doing well. It's not a job to fast track retirement, it would be for memories and to challenge myself.

  • My wife lived in brazil with her family for several years. Fortaleza, sau paulo and rio. Shes told me so many horror stories of how unsafe it is for americans there. One summer she visited on her and stayed with a friend. Several men in black masks jumped the fence and broke into the house with her and her friend home alone. They made it to the safe room, which was really just a bathroom with extra thick walls and a steel door. The men started ripping shingles off the roof and tried coming through the ceiling to get to my wife. She was 17 at the time. Luckily, the police actually did come in time. From the things ive heard from her family, it doesnt seem a great place for americans. People always think " oh itll never happen to me".

    My answer would be hellll no. You're not going to have a penny to your name after 5 years, no matter how far the the US dollar goes over there.

    Well first of all that's the starting salary and I'd likely be promoted to a team leader type position within 6 months and it goes to 36. But you're math is also faulty. I could easily live off of 24-28K down there. Easily, sacrificing nothing. I have money in the bank and so if I can go there for 3-4 years and save 12-15K while I am there it would be a great experience IYAM

    And it just seems like a lazy comment in general, "You wont have a dollar to your name no matter how far a dollar goes".....that just sounds dumb. Like I said, if the ratio stayed the same between my salary and the median income of the surrounding population it would be like me making 65-70K in America. Maybe you didnt see that part.

    Not to go semi-OT, but Rosetta Stone really doesn't work all that well. There are better options out there.

    Rio's a blast. Recommend highly. Not dangerous at all. You'd have to drive about 40 min from there to see anything truly hairy. But lutz, good luck learning Portuguese. Shit's like Madarin baffling. Most people speak English there anyway

    30K in Rio will not go far. Brazil is not Argentina. Their economy is kicking ass right now.

    So if I have money in savings and mutual funds and I go take a job in my field in Brazil for 3 exciting, unforgettable years while not spending more than I make. I become bilingual in a sister language to Spanish. And when I come back all my money has just grown. I will be broke? I will be wealthier financially, experientially, and in terms of my resume. PLEASE stfu.

    Yah kinda does, except she wasnt taken. They just took what they could find valuable. Brazil is a beautiful beautiful country, it can be very unsafe in certain areas, but overall it seems like an amzing place. Go for it. The experience alone will make it worth it.

  • Every non-Brazilian affiliated site I check out says its gotten far safer in the last five years and FIFA is breathing down their necks about securing the Favelas. Apparently they are going to be one of the first nations that go drone heavy for routine security and police surveillance. They will take pictures from a number of angles of each person that is arrested and suspected to be a member of a gang. When those people leave the Favela they can be tracked by drones. Its the way the world is going, I vote yes to make my experience safer.
