Anyone ever make their own BBQ Sauce?

  • I'm intrigued and want to try it out. Wondering if I can get some suggestions? I'm all about some sweet and tangy.

  • I make my own whenever I run out of store bought stuff. It's pretty easy...check Allrecipes.com or FoodTV.com.

Also, we have a vacation condo in NC and eat at the local BBQ joint. Their sauce sucks. It's not even sauce. It's vinegar. Tastes like open ass.

MSU isn't a very good football program.. takes year of consistent winning to get to that level. - copemoney 1/22/13

I experiment with different sauces all the time. If you are going sweet and tangy I would work with a base of equal amounts ketchup and Apple cider vinegar. After that you could throw in (in much smaller quantities) some brown sugar and/or molasses for sweetness and mustard for additional tang.

As for spices, I would suggest experimenting with a mixture of celery salt, fresh black pepper, chili powder, cayenne, onion powder, or garlic powder to taste.

Additional throw ins you might consider include liquid smoke and soy sauce.

Blend it and heat till simmering except for the additional throw ins (add those after heating). It really is all about taste and the type of meat you are going to put it on, so exact proportions are silly. Just keep tasting it. It is actually fun and pretty easy the more you do.

This is about as easy as it gets.

    1 1/2 cups brown sugar
    1 1/2 cups ketchup
    1/2 cup red wine vinegar
    1/2 cup water
    1 tablespoon worcestershire
    2 1/2 tablespoon dry mustard
    2 teaspoons paprika
    2 teaspoons salt
    1 1/2 teaspoons black pepper

Combine brown sugar, ketchup, vinegar, water and worcestershire in a blender. Then add the rest and blend until smooth.

And if you like it hot add some hot sauce or cayenne pepper

Simmer for 15 min while measuring into small bowl:
1/4 lemon minced (after juicing into sauce on stove)
    1/2 tsp cumin
    1 tsp ground coriander
    1/8 tsp Spanish paprika
    1/8 tsp saffron
    1/4 tsp ground ginger
add to sauce after 15 minutes of simmering simmer another 4-5 min after adding. Enjoy!

  • Use ketchup as a base, add some molasis, liquid smoke etc till find the combo you like. Fwiw I hate vinegar based BBQ sauce which is NC style.
