Anyone living in Norfolk/Chesapeake VA area?

  • Hard work has finally paid off and it looks as though I will be relocating to Virginia in the next 6 months. Office will be in Newport News, so general area from Chesapeake to Williamsburg is my target...

    Anyone have any insight?

  • I live on vb, fishing buddy live in my hood and drives to nn everyday. But it's a long way and traffic can suck

  • Yeah I def considered just doing that, but I hear the tunnels can really screw you...

    I know the area a little, been up here working for 5 weeks now; my customer is hiring me away from current employer

  • Traffic on 64 sucks. Stay away from the tunnels at all costs. If there are ever delays, and there will be, they are like 4 hours. The speed limit is 65 and you're lucky to find people going 63. I lived on the west end of Richmond and worked about 10 miles west of Williamsburg, which was like an hour commute to stay away from that end of town. I would definitely advise living in Williamsburg over Newport News. Good luck! I enjoyed my time in VA. RTR!

  • I travel to the 757 pretty often for work. The traffic down there is terrible (not as bad as northern VA, but nothing is). It's not just from the number of cars on the road, but it seems like 95% of people go full retard when they get behind the wheel.

    lolz, yeah NoVa is traffic on steroids these days

    There was a funny segment of a local radio show the other day where some guy was talking about how you could see the terrible traffic on the beltway from a picture from space... it was so funny listening to him go off about it

    The metro construction has been unbearable and we still got a few more years to go, you couldn't tell this country is in debt by living in NoVa.... this place never stops growing

  • I know very little about the Hampton/NN/Williamsburg areas as far as living. There are some nice places on the water, but I know there are some very not nice areas too. I always thought of Williamsburg as a family place to live, so if the OP is married that is a great option.

    You really do want to avoid the tunnels if at all possible, they aren't horrible (all the time) in the off season but come summer it is unbearable. My office is in Glen Allen but I am only up there for a day every other week or so but many of my clients are in Richmond so I am up and down at least once a week...there are some ways to cut off traffic, but you always have to go through a tunnel.

  • I lived in Newport News for 3 years. If your work is based there, I would strongly suggest looking at Williamsburg. You do not want to live on the other side of the tunnel... the commute going accross the water is brutal during rush hour and even worse in the summer.

    Outside of Williamsburg, the only other place I would look is Yorktown, but you have to be careful... areas on the north side of the Peninsula flood out. Poquoson is a nice neighborhood, but again, it floods. Stay away from Hampton and Newport News.

    When I lived there, I had a house in Hilton Village in Newport News. The house was great, the neighborhood was really cool, but I lived only about a mile from the slums and it did spill over a bit. Lots of house break-ins. I'm glad I got my house sold and got out of there.

    Where in Newport News will you be working? There are some nice commercial areas as long as you are out of the trashy city part of town.

    It depends... if it is in the city, I would be worried. If not, it may be a nice setup.

    Yeah, they can be nasty. There are some shortcuts to the one bridge/tunnel if you go through the bad parts... I very rarely did.

    I do them once in a while...Judgement day...I aint going at night. The 11PM news here is all NN/PTown Shootings. PTown pushed many out and they went to NN. That's bad S in there man.

    Yeah, I used to work at the Bank of America building in downtown Norfolk. To get home, the quickest way was usually through the downtown tunnel and then a beautiful (lol) drive through downtown P-Town up to the MM-Bridge/tunnel. I think had an option... I could either get off right away at Jefferson Ave (the bad part) or go all the way around until I hit 64. If it was daytime, I usually went Jefferson as it was faster. But there is no way in hell I would go that way if it was dark. I did once, and it scared that Shizz out of me. And I have been in bad areas before (been all over Philly) but that took the cake.
