  • That's really cool -- I probably would have no idea it was Metallica if you hadn't mentioned it (and it wasn't on the artwork). Was never really into their music, but these guys are really good.

    Fuzz

  • Yeah that song is a little harder to figure out, they do a cover of Enter Sandman that is easy to figure out, but it might be cuz it's arguably Metallica's most famous song

Do these guys have any more songs like this? I know they are usually a bit heavier/sludgier.

I think the music to this one is pretty cool, but I wasn't digging the vocals when the dude started crooning.

Not sure if you would like it... but there is a band called Genghis Tron that I think is pretty awesome. They mix a lot of heavy guitar work with some cool electronics (sort of like this one at times). Anyway, your song struck up my Genghis Tron interest and I'm gonna listen to them a little bit tonight. Check it out. I'll post some tracks later

They are good for about one slow song per album. I would check out the below, see if you like that:

Down's "His Majesty the Desert" from the album "Down III - Over the Under"... Beautiful song!!! Please try just to enjoy in this masterpiece of music and not to argue over Pantera/Down/Phil/Dimebag topics. This song is simply too great to ruin it with argues!!! Enjoy :)

  • Here is one of the first Genghis Tron tracks I heard -- it's pretty schizophrenic sounding but that's their niche.

Heavy Mental do you listen to these guys? I don't know them well enough to put out a highlight list of tracks. Not sure anyone would really care either.

I don't know them really well, but I've seen them open at a few shows and they are a favorite of Decibel magazine (a lot of page time there). I do agree that we wouldn't get a lot of responses here - grindcore (and its derivatives) isn't exactly the most accessible of genres.

Do you like any other grind-ish bands? I like Nasum, Rotten Sound and especially Discordance Axis.

  • I might like a few others, but I'm not really tuned into to what all of the separate sub-genre's of heavy music... there are too many subdivisions it just gets confusing. I'm not familiar with the three that you mentioned though. What separates grindcore from the field? What is the defining characteristic?

Genghis Tron to me is one of those bands that I really like listening to, but I imagine they would sound terrible live. Did their sound translate well when you saw them?

From wiki, hope this clears things up a bit:

"Grindcore is an extreme genre of music that started in the early- to mid-1980s. It draws inspiration from some of the most abrasive music genres – including death metal, industrial music, noise and the more extreme varieties of hardcore punk.

Grindcore is characterized by heavily distorted, down-tuned guitars, high speed tempo, blast beats, and vocals which consist of incomprehensible growls, or high-pitched shrieks."

I can only handle so much of the stuff, and I'm into some pretty intense forms of music. Most of it is garbage, IMO. I do like the bands I listed, though all of them are acquired tastes. You're spot on that it sounds like crap live.

For the record, I consider grindcore a '10' on a 1 - 10 scale of heaviness, and my wheelhouse is more in the 7 - 9 range.

Yeah I still post over there from time to time. Honestly, there aren't many music threads anymore and the familiar faces are few and far between. If I see someone who would add value, I'll give them a look.

I agree though, a good music discussion would be killer. My biggest value adds are heavy music and hip hop. I have a healthy appreciation and love for good indie rock and electronic music, but I just don't know as much about it, which is why I love these discussions.

  • How about a heavy electronic song? Seriously though, I am lacking in the heavy music and hip hop dept. but do have a pretty good indie, classic rock, and spacey music collection. I know GILLIG was hated over there, but he was pretty good for music discussion.
