Anzalone announcing decision at The Opening...

I know where you're coming from, but I'm sure you won't hear many people say "BOB didn't do as good of a job as BK" which was the point of the part I quoted. It's much more likely to hear "without Sandusky, PSU lands him" over an admission BK recruited him better. Nobody will ever know the truth anyway unless AA goes way against his MO and flat out says why one school is better than the other, so it's a moot point. Didn't mean to offend, just honestly what I believe. It's easier to make excuses than think about other scenarios.

I don't think people would say either one of those things.

Actually, most recruits do explain why they chose a school after the announcement. Will probably be able to get a clue from what he says afterward.

Most explain why they do, but most don't say what went wrong with the other school (i.e. "BOB wasn't as good" or "Sandusky made me stay away")

I guess a more appropriate response to the original would be "Good luck getting most PSU fans to admit ND outrecruited BOB for him." Basically conveys what I was trying to say without the Sandusky reference, which I still think will be used as an excuse by some.

We are all lunatics for hanging on the college choices of 17 year old's. I pine for the simplicity of the old days where only the season & games mattered.

"BOB IS AMAZING OMG!" Seriously, many of our posters are starting to feel he's a great coach just based on recruiting. Tough to temper their expectations considering he has yet to coach a snap and doesn't have the greatest track record ever. I'm hopeful he can be a very good coach, but I have no freaking clue at this point. Charlie Weis is the obvious comparison, so I'm in wait and see mode.

Realistically, that's all we have to judge him on currently.

I believe it was the poster Solo (seems to be connected to both the Florida high school football scene and PSU coaches) who said that he looked into the coaching staff after they were hired and figured their weakness would be recruiting, but their strength would be teaching. I don't know much about the staff except that I think their evaluations have been very good overall of recruits, and they've done a good job selling kids on the program. The one guy I do know about is Stan Hixon, the WR coach who is formerly of the Bills, and I can say with certainty that his strength is definitely teaching. He did a whole lot with very little during his tenure at Buffalo.

Weis would be the surface comparison, but I don't believe it's a good comparison.

We'll have to see, but at this point I do think the strengths of the coaching staff will be on the field.

I'll also add that based on what Anzalone's brothers said about how BOB recruits, I wouldn't be surprised if that just wasn't the strength of our coaches. Basically said it was "here's what we have to offer, take it or leave it." They don't schmooze or flatter or anything, just very laid back, possibly to the point of seeming apathetic.

I can understand if a ND fan thinks he's going there. It's very close.

But I'm not sure what basis you're using to say this. PSU was third in the race to UF and ND going into his visit. We heard many good things about it and suddenly PSU is even with ND, with UF in third place. What part of that makes it seem like his visit solidified things for ND? The only way it did is if PSU somehow negatively recruited UF to the point where now both UF and PSU stood behind ND, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

No reason actually. Just a feeling I have. Things I've read and things I have heard. Like I said at the end of my post...JMO. biggrin

That's the comparison I'd use too. Hopefully for PSU fans BOB is miles above CW when it comes to coaching/managing all aspects of a football team. The similarities at this point are pretty close. What are your guys expectations for the upcoming season?

O'Brien has humility, which is something Weis never had while at ND, and IMO, is the reason why he was fired. He acted like he was the shit, but couldn't back it up on the field.

If Weis had been a little more humble, he might still be your HC. He just rubbed people the wrong way.

O'Brien has put together an excellent staff, Fitzgerald as S&C being the most important. I expect we will begin to see the impact of our new training regimen this season.

I also am confident that we will see a "thinking" offensive gameplan, instead of the "this is what we're doing, try and stop us" gameplan that we've seen in years past.

If we don't win more than 8 games it's because of talent, not because of coaching. I predict O'Brien will gain a good deal of positive recognition for his efforts this season.
