Are straight people born straight?

  • From the article:

Says Bailey, "if you can't make a genetic male be attracted to other males by rearing him as a girl from early in life, how likely is any socialization theory of homosexuality or heterosexuality? I think not likely," at least for males.

Some food for thought for all the choicers on the board.

Are Straight People Born That Way? - Alice Dreger - Health - The Atlantic

The best scientific argument we have for the innateness of straightness is that evolution would favor it. But a poll of sexologists raises some interesting questions about arousal.

  • There is no choice in sexual orientation. This is one of the most obvious things in the world.

The only people who believe so are hardcore religious people, and they know this because the Bible told them.

    It's pretty ridiculous IMO.

With all the negative stereotypes around gays why would anyone choose to be so?

Plus all the science to the contrary. It just doesn't hold any weight.

The "reasons" I have heard the most are that LGBTQ people want attention so they choose to be hated, ridiculed, and without legal protections. Or that they had a "bad home life" which means not enough church going to the people arguing it.

    Agreed.

And the reasons for religions hating on homosexuals are so obvious.

    A) They're the minority. It's easier to appeal to the majority and make them feel superior.

    B) They wanted their believers to reproduce. In the old days, this was difficult for homosexuals.

Lulz. I know a few people who have had a great family and turned out homosexuals.

My uncle was gay told my grandparents and they abandoned him, I'm sure he wanted that.

Like I said the argument holds no weight.

It's sad people continue to be so ignorant towards the issue, Canada is doing better these days. Obviously there are homophobes, but being one gets you ridiculed in public.

Sadly, on tBB, being a homophobe gets you upvotes.

Seriously, why is it ok on here to call people "f_ _" or say they're gay like it's a bad thing? Do we have a ton of 12 year olds on here? I don't consider the 4 letter F word as bad as the 3 letter F word; the former is a general expression while the latter is a specific demeaning word aimed at belittling a group of people.

    Rant over.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

Meh, men are more likely to be conservative than liberal on average. People on this board are slightly more likely to be from the South, where they're more likely to be religious- and self-righteous.

I feel like the younger generation is better at avoiding those stereotypes, in large part because of the prominence of gay celebrities and shows.

I'm guilty of using those words and I am trying to stop. As I stepped into the real world I've met and worked with numerous gay people, and it really doesn't bother me whatsoever anymore. Public displays of affection between them still tripa me out, but I'm not gunna hate.

I don't use them as a intentionally hurtful, but I used them a bunch when I was a kid and it's sadly stuck in my vocab.

I've cleaned it up for the most part, but I agree it's a joke.

I just don't get why anyone would think someone chooses to be gay? It's gotta be a horrible experience coming out, telling your friends, fearing they will no longer be friends, your family etc.

Whatever it is what it is, not expecting to change perception or view points. Just don't get it is all.

Then they will say you are being bigoted for trying to take away their "right" to discriminate against you.

The theocracies of the Middle East are much better places to live than the majority atheist Scandanavian countries. Right?

  • I'm not going to delve into the religious issue much other then saying this.

Most current wars and conflicts are stationed around religion.

But just because a book that was written thousands of years ago says that god only creates perfect people doesn't mean gays choose their orientation.

Thousands of years ago the world was flat. The interpretation of the bible just keeps changing to help solidify peoples current viewpoints.

So the ability to oppress people is more important than letting people have the freedom to practice what they believe?

I don't believe forced conversions have the same holding power as ones that come within oneself.

....despite the fact that people who live in those countries and are the majority religion have been overthrowing those governments quite a bit in the last few years?

I don't think you'd enjoy it quite as much as you think. That being said, I'd be okay if you went and tried it out.
