Are these numbers believable to you?

  • Didn't read the article but I know lots of black tips are eaten daily. Although I don't eat them, I know lots of people that do. With the fishing limits in Florida if people are out trout fishing and catch one or two(the limit) they keep them. Does the article include fresh water as well?

We all know that the only thing National Geographic is good for anymore is for preteen boys who can't get their hands on actual porn to get their first glimpse at naked African tribeswomen boobs.

    Anything else is just irrelevant.

It doesn't say, but I would assume so.

BTW that 100,000 million is like only 6-7% of sharks being killed a year...according to the article. What is that like 1.3 billion or so sharks they are saying exist? Math may be wrong, lol.

If there are really that many being killed, then i'm not sure I want to know how many there are in the sea. Also, I may never set foot in the ocean again.

  • These sharks aren't just being killed for rich people in China. It's mostly bycatch. In bottom-trawling for shrimp, the shrimp is sometimes as little as 6 or 7 percent of the catch.

100 million is probably high, but the UN estimated it was 10 million/year in the mid-2000s. Don't kid yourself, it's a big number.

The yearly tuna catch is 4-5 million tons. Not fish--tons. 60% of that catch is skipjack tuna, which usually only weigh 20 pounds each.

I am not going to say they are wrong, because I have no way of knowing, but it is hard to imagine that every single day 276,243 sharks are killed around the world.

Looking at the Wikipedia article on "sharks" and it also has a few articles from 2010 studies that say around 100 million sharks are killed each year. So if this is a new study it isn't the first to come up with that number.

6.5 billion people eating 100 million sharks a year doesn't sound too crazy.

Like everything else in the ocean sharks are getting fcuked.

    Thats a good point.

Bottom trawling is banned in most US federal waters.

But all those shrimp people are buying from Asia (though many are farmed) are killing alot of other species. Yet it is still cheaper than Gulf Coast shrimp.

Insert your penis in its rear.

Based on their math, we can kill 75 million to maintain population stability. Doesn't make 100 sound so awful.

    Absolutely exaggerated.

I also call BS on the part of the article that says Shark's Fin Soup is a delicacy on par with caviar or truffles. I was in China and Cambodia at various points in the mid-late 90s, and I had Shark's Fin Soup and it was far from a delicacy - it was commonly available for low prices.

That's the point. The Japanese and others SLAUGHTER sharks by the millions.

Just remember this everybody... If the Great White is wiped out and it's numbers are declining, the sea will die. When the sea dies, we die.

What makes the Great Whit particularly important in your eyes?

Well, it was always my favorite animal as a kid and I went cage diving with them in South Africa by Seal Island. The skipper was straight out of Jaws as he had a thick accent and scar from his ear to the middle of his neck (not a shark, bar fight). They also had a team of scientists on board and they were very knowledgeable and informative. Without the great white, the seal population would explode. The chain reaction would be insane as seals would devour enormous quantities of fish. It would lead to an imbalance in the food chain and the ocean would eventually unrepairable. Species of different marine life would be extinct and the ocean would eventually die. You can't have the apex predator fall off or the consequences are fatal.

The great white needs to be protected as do all animals to ensure balance in the world.
